Chapter 2 - The Pharmacist’s Prescription

I reached out with trembling fingers, taking the evidence bag. Inside was a pharmacy printout stapled to a handwritten instruction sheet. At the top, printed in bold ink, was a schedule of controlled sedative dosages, matched with a signature that didn't belong to either my husband or me.

It belonged to my sister’s ex-boyfriend, a pharmaceutical rep who had lost his license six months prior.

“She didn't just borrow the garage fob,” Officer Vance said, his voice hard as iron. He turned his attention directly toward my sister, who was now backing away toward her dark SUV, her hands trembling. “She systematically acquired a heavy-grade synthetic central nervous system depressant, dissolved it into something consumed in this house, and used the missing key fob to slip inside while your husband was working.”

“No... no, you don't understand!” my sister shrieked, her voice cracking into hysteria as she threw her hands up. “I needed money! Daniel—he promised me if I could just get Mark out of the picture for a few days, get him to sign over the secondary business deed we co-owned, everything would be fine! It was supposed to knock him out for twelve hours, just long enough for me to clear the home office safe!”

My breath caught in my throat. Mark, my husband, wasn’t just a meticulous family man who changed batteries; he held a twenty-percent equity stake in a lucrative commercial logistics patent that my sister had been trying to buy out for a fraction of its value.

“You drugged my husband,” I whispered, the horror washing over me in freezing waves. “And my ten-year-old daughter walked right into the middle of it.”
