Chapter 7 - Awakening in Room 302

Back down the corridor, the steady, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor in Room 302 shifted tempo.

I pushed the heavy door open just an inch. Mark was stirring, his eyelids fluttering against the harsh overhead lights as he tried to lift a hand that still felt heavy with residual sedatives.

“Mark?” I whispered, hurrying to his bedside and pressing my hand gently over his warm palm.

His eyes slowly focused, cloudy with confusion and exhaustion. “Honey... what... what happened? Why am I in the hospital? I remember... working on the logistics patent spreadsheet... and then everything went black.”

“You were poisoned, Mark,” I said softly, stroking his hair back from his damp forehead. “My sister let herself in with our spare garage fob. She put sedatives in the house to knock you out long enough to clean out your office safe and steal the equity deed to our house.”

Mark tried to sit up, a wave of dizziness catching him before I gently pushed him back onto the pillows. His face twisted in disbelief, morphing quickly into a bitter, cold anger.

“Chloe?” he rasped, his voice rough. “Where’s Chloe? Is our daughter safe?”

“She’s right down the hall in pediatric ICU, resting,” I reassured him, leaning down to kiss his cheek. “She’s going to make a full recovery, Mark. But the people who did this are going away for a very, very long time.”
