Chapter 5 - The Grand Jury Subpoena

“Your sister has been booked at the county precinct without bail,” the prosecutor said, opening her portfolio to reveal a stack of formal arraignment documents. “Given the premeditated nature of the poisoning, the use of a controlled substance obtained through fraudulent medical channels, and the collateral endangerment of a minor, the District Attorney’s office is pushing for multiple felony indictments.”

She paused, handing me a thick manila envelope stamped with red lettering.

“Furthermore,” the prosecutor continued, her eyes locking onto mine with professional resolve, “during the search of your sister’s apartment an hour ago, investigators found a second set of keys and a drafted quitclaim deed for your primary residence—signed with a forged signature bearing your husband’s name, and notarized by an individual who happens to be tied to your sister’s financial accounts.”

I stared down at the envelope, feeling the final remnants of the life I thought I knew crumble into dust.

“She didn't just want the business equity,” I said softly, looking back through the glass window at my sleeping daughter. “She wanted the house too.”

“She wanted everything,” the prosecutor replied grimly. “And tomorrow morning, we’re going to make sure she loses it all.”
