Chapter 15 - Shadows of Eleanor

The words felt like a physical blow. Julian didn't move as Victoria turned on her heel, signaled her attorneys, and slid back into the town car without attempting to enter the house.

"We’ll be at the Peninsula downtown," Victoria called out through the lowering window. "The board of directors meets tomorrow morning at nine, Julian. We’ll see if the shareholders think a man who chemically sedated his own toddler is competent to run the Vance empire."

The town car sped down the driveway, leaving Julian alone on the limestone terrace with Frank standing ten feet away, his hand still resting near his service weapon.

Julian looked down at the card in his hand. It wasn't an attorney's contact. It was the private registry code for a climate-controlled storage vault located at the downtown depository—registered under Eleanor Vance’s name five days before the car accident that took her life.

Clara appeared at the top of the terrace stairs, having heard the car pull away. She saw Julian standing motionless in the cold wind, looking completely shattered.

She walked down the steps and stood beside him. "Julian? What did she say to you?"

Julian couldn't speak. He handed her the card, his breath coming in shallow, ragged bursts.

"Frank," Clara said immediately, taking control when Julian seemed paralyzed. "Get the car ready. We’re going to this address."

"Clara, no," Julian managed to say, his voice thick. "Leo—"

"Leo is with Mrs. Higgins in the kitchen baking cookies," Clara interrupted gently but firmly. "Frank has two armed guards stationed at the nursery door. If your sister is planning an ambush at your board meeting tomorrow, we need to know what’s in that vault today. You cannot fight an enemy if you don't know the truth."

Within forty minutes, Frank drove them through the private security bay beneath the Manhattan safe deposit facility. The vault manager, recognizing Julian immediately, led them through three reinforced steel doors into a private viewing suite.

A heavy, industrial steel lockbox was placed on the table before them.

The manager bowed and withdrew, locking the door behind him.

Julian’s hands were shaking so violently that Clara gently reached out, took the brass key from his fingers, and inserted it into the keyhole. With a firm twist, the heavy latches released.

Clara lifted the lid.

Inside lay no jewels, no corporate bonds.

There was a collection of video cassette backups, a stack of medical records from a private fertility clinic in Boston, and a handwritten diary bound in teal leather—Eleanor’s favorite color.

Julian collapsed into the leather chair, staring at his late wife’s handwriting. "Why would she hide this from me? We were happy. We had everything."

"Julian, read the first entry," Clara said softly, opening the diary to the marked page.

The entry was dated six months before Leo was born:

*Julian doesn't know. I can never let him know. The board members are threatening to expose the clinic records if Julian doesn't approve the merger with Kane Global. Marcus Kane came to the house today while Julian was in Tokyo. He told me that if Julian doesn't sign, they will destroy his reputation and take my baby before he ever takes his first breath. I have hired Evelyn. She promised to help me hide the documentation. She is the only one in the house I can trust...*

Clara gasped. "Marcus Kane. Your Chief Financial Officer."

Julian surged to his feet, the fog of grief instantly replaced by white-hot clarity. "Marcus Kane was the one who brought Evelyn Gable to the estate. He personally vouched for her credentials after Eleanor’s funeral!"

May you like

Evelyn Gable hadn't been an independent rogue housekeeper skimming money. She was a plant—placed inside the home years ago by Julian’s own executive partner to keep a leash on Julian’s family from the inside out.
