Chapter 18 - The Reckoning

With a single tap on Frank’s tablet, the massive presentation screens mounted on the boardroom wall illuminated.

The high-definition security footage played first: Marcus Kane entering Julian’s home study in the dead of night, slipping thumb drives into corporate terminals while Evelyn Gable stood watch.

Next came the pediatric pharmaceutical logs, cross-referenced with wire transfers from Marcus Kane’s private Swiss subsidiary directly into Evelyn Gable’s off-shore accounts.

"For three years," Julian said, addressing the horrified board members, "Marcus Kane used Evelyn Gable to maintain absolute control over my household. Whenever I prepared to audit our European branch, my son was deliberately poisoned with sedatives to induce synthetic seizures, forcing me to remain home. Meanwhile, Marcus transferred over twenty million dollars through forged consulting accounts."

Elder board member Arthur Pendelton, who had served with Julian’s father for three decades, stood up, shaking with rage. "Marcus... is this true?"

"It’s a fabrication!" Marcus hissed, backing toward the side exit, his eyes wild. "These videos are deepfakes! Evelyn Gable acted alone! Victoria, tell them!"

Victoria looked at Marcus, then at the uniformed police detectives waiting by the door. Her cold calculation instantly kicked in. She pushed her chair back, raising her hands in surrender.

"I had no knowledge of this," Victoria said, her voice shaking slightly as she abandoned Marcus without a second thought. "Julian, I swear to God... I thought you were genuinely neglecting Leo. Marcus approached me in London. He showed me medical reports claiming you were abusing the boy. He told me filing for guardianship was the only way to save Leo!"

"You didn't care about saving Leo," Clara interrupted, speaking clearly across the room. Her voice was quiet, but it carried an authority that silenced the entire boardroom. "You cared about proxy voting rights, Victoria. If you had cared about that little boy for one single second, you would have come to the house yourself instead of waiting for a corrupt petition to clear the family court."

Victoria flinched, unable to meet Clara’s steady gaze.

"Marcus Kane," the lead NYPD detective said, stepping forward with a set of steel handcuffs. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As the steel cuffs clicked around Marcus’s wrists, the disgraced executive looked back at Julian, his face twisted in venomous hatred.

"You think you won, Julian?" Marcus sneered, being shoved toward the door. "You think Evelyn was the only one? You don't even know half of what your precious Eleanor was hiding before she died!"

Julian didn't flinch. He stood tall, watching as the man who had poisoned his family was dragged into the corridor under the flashing cameras of the arriving press.

Julian turned to Arthur Pendelton. "Call an emergency shareholder vote for three o'clock. I am resuming full operational command of Vance Holdings today."

The board members nodded vigorously, several of them coming forward to offer apologies and handshakes, but Julian walked past them all. He walked straight to Clara, who stood by the window, clutching Eleanor’s diary to her chest.

"Let’s go home," Julian said softly. "Our boy is waiting."
