Chapter 20 - The Hidden Safety Deposit

Julian stepped back, his protective instincts immediately flaring. "What kind of package?"

"It’s not addressed to you, Julian," Frank said, holding out a sealed wooden box wrapped in heavy craft paper and secured with red wax seals.

Julian frowned. "Then who is it for?"

Frank looked directly at Clara. "It’s addressed to Miss Clara Miller. Personally."

Clara stared at the package in shock. "To me? I don't know anyone in Switzerland."

"Bring it inside," Julian ordered, leading them into the study.

Frank carefully cut through the heavy wax seals with a pocketknife and opened the wooden lid. Inside, resting on black velvet, was an antique brass skeleton key, a flash drive, and a handwritten letter on personalized stationery bearing the monogram *E.V.*

"Eleanor Vance," Julian whispered, his voice trembling.

Clara picked up the letter. Her hands shook as she opened the folded paper. The handwriting was elegant, dated three days before Eleanor’s fatal accident:

*Dear Clara,*

*If you are reading this, it means Evelyn failed me, Marcus made his move, and Julian was forced to wake up. You do not know me, but I know you. When I realized Marcus Kane was closing the net around my family, I hired an independent private intelligence firm to find someone—anyone—who possessed the integrity, background, and courage to protect my baby if I didn't survive.*

*I reviewed seventy-four nanny profiles. I chose you. I arranged for your agency to receive an anonymous corporate grant to sponsor your placement in high-profile estates. I knew that when the time came, Julian’s agency would pick your dossier.*

*You were never brought here by accident, Clara. I chose you to be Leo’s guardian angel.*

*The brass key belongs to Vault 414 at the Zurich Private Depository. Inside is the final piece of evidence Marcus was terrified of. It is not about money. It is the truth about what Julian’s father did to build this empire—and why my death was never an accident.*

*Trust no one, Clara. Not even Julian.*

Clara stopped reading, her breath caught in her throat. She looked up at Julian, whose eyes were wide with confusion, love, and growing dread.

The woman who had hired her wasn't an agency director. The woman who had placed her in this house had orchestrated her arrival from beyond the grave.

"What does it say, Clara?" Julian asked, taking a step toward her, reaching for the letter. "Clara, what did Eleanor write?"

Clara looked at the brass key in her palm, then at the man she had grown to care for—a man whose entire life had just been shattered, only to reveal an even deeper, darker foundation beneath the ruins.

May you like

She slowly closed her fingers around the key.
