Chapter 2 - Behind the Closed Door

I stepped past Margaret without another word, my shoes clicking against the hardwood floor as I walked down the dim corridor toward her private office. Behind me, I heard Margaret’s sharp intake of breath, followed by the rapid scuffle of her footsteps moving to block my path. She reached the office door just ahead of me, her hand resting firmly on the brass knob as if guarding a vault.

"Mr. Caldwell, you cannot simply barge into my workspace," Margaret said, her voice losing its previous polished calm and taking on a sharp, defensive edge. "There are confidential household ledgers, staff files, and personal administrative records in there that require privacy."

"Move your hand, Margaret," I said, my voice flat and absolute.

She held her ground for a second, her fingers whitening against the brass, but the cold authority in my stare finally forced her to step aside. I pushed the door open and walked into the small, meticulously organized room. The air inside smelled faintly of lavender and old paper. Filing cabinets lined the walls, and a heavy oak desk sat beneath a window overlooking the back garden. At first glance, it looked like any standard estate manager's office.

"Are you satisfied now?" Margaret asked from the doorway, her arms crossed tightly over her chest. "As you can see, it is simply paperwork and supply inventories."

"Not quite," I murmured, walking over to the desk.

I noticed a small, modern security monitor tucked discreetly into the corner of the bookshelf, partially concealed behind a stack of housekeeping manuals. It was wired directly into a multi-channel digital recording system. My heart pounded against my ribs as I leaned in closer. The screen was currently dark, but a small indicator light showed it was in standby mode.

"What is that?" I asked, pointing at the monitor.

Margaret’s face drained of color, her composure finally fracturing completely. "It's... it's just the perimeter security feed. For the grounds."

"The perimeter cameras feed into the main security room by the front gates, Margaret," I said, turning slowly to face her. "Not into a private monitor hidden in your office desk."

I reached out and pressed the power button on the console. The screen flickered to life, illuminating a grid of multiple camera angles. Most of them showed empty hallways and doorways, but one feed was labeled Nursery - East Wing. Another was labeled Playroom. I watched in mounting horror as I clicked through the archived playback files, revealing weeks of footage that showed Margaret entering the nursery while the boys were resting, speaking in harsh, low tones that caused the infants to shrink back in terror, and deliberately removing their favorite toys whenever they showed signs of attachment.

Margaret took a step backward toward the hallway, her eyes darting toward the front entrance. "You don't understand, sir. Children need strict boundaries. They grow up spoiled if you coddle them with nonsense like playtime and singing."

"You terrorized my sons," I said, my voice shaking with a cold fury I had rarely experienced in the corporate boardroom. "You systematically frightened two one-year-old boys into silence because you couldn't tolerate noise or warmth in this house."

Before Margaret could bolt toward the exit, Lena appeared in the doorway holding Nico and Noah, her expression resolute. She didn't say a word, but the sight of my sons clinging to her provided all the grounding I needed. Margaret realized her career in my home—and her carefully guarded control over my life—was permanently over. She lowered her arms, her defiant posture collapsing into bitter resignation as she realized no amount of excuses would save her.
