Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Ruin

Derek’s arrogant irritation hung in the humid foyer air like a bad odor. He stepped closer, planting his expensive leather shoe over the threshold of my doorway as if he still held dominion over every room I occupied.
"I asked you a question, Claire," Derek snapped, his eyes darting impatiently past my shoulder into the quiet interior of the house. "Stop playing these childish games. The estate lawyers are breathing down our necks, and the bank locked all secondary trust disbursements this morning. We need your signature on the corporate release forms right now."
I didn't move an inch. I kept my weight centered, my arms folded across my chest, blocking his path entirely. Behind him, Vivian adjusted her diamond-encrusted brooch, her lips pursed into a thin, tight line of impatient condescension.
"You're standing on the porch of a house you don't own, demanding favors from a woman you left to bleed in a cemetery," I said, my voice eerily calm.
Vivian scoffed, stepping into the doorway and attempting to slide past me with an artificial, patronizing chuckle. "Oh, don't be so dramatic, Claire. Families bicker during times of loss. It was raining, the emotions were high, and frankly, making a spectacle of yourself at Samuel’s gravesite was entirely uncalled for. Now, let us in to see the baby. Derek is busy."
"I asked you a very simple question, Vivian," I interrupted, my tone dropping into a freezing register that made her pause mid-step. "Which grandchild?"
Derek’s face flushed a mottled, angry red. He reached out, his thick fingers grabbing the edge of the door frame. "What the hell is wrong with you? Samuel only had one child! The baby upstairs! Now move aside before I call the authorities and have you cited for withholding family access!"
"Authorities?" A cold, humorless smile touched the corners of my mouth. "Go ahead, Derek. Call them. Tell them you're demanding entry into the private estate of the sole primary shareholder of Hale Enterprises. Let’s see who the police take seriously."
Derek froze. His hand twitched on the door frame. "The sole primary shareholder of what?"
May you like
"Hale Enterprises," I repeated clearly, watching the blood drain completely from his face. "The holding company your brother spent the last ten years running into the ground while I quietly bought out his corporate debt. Samuel didn't just leave you a watch, Derek. He left you a bankrupt legacy. And I am the one holding the keys to the vault."
