Chapter 9 - The Bait on the Line

The afternoon sun cast long, sharp shadows across the private terrace of a high-end equestrian club located thirty miles outside the city—a neutral, secluded meeting ground chosen specifically to draw Julian Vance out into the open.

I sat inside a discreetly parked surveillance van parked down the winding country lane, staring at bank of high-definition monitors displaying every angle of the terrace. Beside me, Marcus monitored the tactical feeds while three armed federal marshals stood by in unmarked vehicles positioned at strategic escape chokepoints.

"Target vehicle approaching the north gate," Marcus announced, pointing to a flashing red icon on the digital map. "Black armored Mercedes Maybach. Two occupants. License plate matches Julian Vance’s corporate registry."

Through the camera feed, I watched the sleek black vehicle glide smoothly into the club's private parking circle. The rear door opened, and Julian Vance stepped out, impeccably dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, his silver-streaked hair catching the sunlight. He didn't look like a desperate criminal; he looked like a king inspecting his domain. He was accompanied by a single, heavily built bodyguard who scanned the tree line with practiced military precision.

Arthur Pendelton sat nervously at an outdoor table on the terrace, clutching a leather briefcase to his chest as Julian walked up and pulled out a chair opposite him without an invitation.

"You sound rattled on the phone, Arthur," Julian’s voice came clearly through the hidden directional mic planted beneath the table. "Dropping the audit so suddenly? Sounds like Mrs. Hale finally realized she's playing a game way out of her league."

"She... she's terrified, Julian," Arthur stammered, playing his assigned role with trembling authenticity. "After last night's... warning, she realized she can't fight a syndicate like Apex. Here are the release documents. All signed and notarized. Just sign your copy, and the offshore accounts will be unlocked."

Julian chuckled, a cold, arrogant sound that carried easily across the audio feed. He didn't open the folder immediately. Instead, he leaned back, resting his arms on the wrought-iron chair.

"Tell me, Arthur... did she really think she could inherit a multi-million-dollar estate and expect no one to notice the missing ledger entries?" Julian asked smoothly. "Samuel was a weak link, but his wife seems surprisingly resilient. Too bad resilience doesn't stop a bullet."

Inside the surveillance van, my fingers tightened around the edge of the console.

Julian picked up a gold fountain pen, flipped open the folder, and uncapped the pen. "Hand me the verification key, Arthur. Then we'll consider this matter closed."

Before Arthur could reach into his pocket, Marcus pressed a button on the master comms panel and spoke into his tactical microphone.
