Chapter 8 - The Shadow of Apex

The revelation hung in the air like a suffocating cloud. Julian Vance. The same ruthless corporate raider and private security mogul who had been waging an underground economic war across Washington and New York.

I slowly walked around the desk, returning to my seat as my mind raced through the tactical implications. "Samuel never mentioned any debt owed to Apex Logistics."

"He couldn't," Pendelton said miserably, keeping his head bowed. "Julian used forged promissory notes and leveraged corporate assets to trap Samuel into silence. If Samuel tried to audit the accounts, Julian threatened to expose the family business to federal regulators. Samuel died under immense stress, Claire. His heart simply gave out under the weight of the secrets he was carrying."

A cold ache bloomed in my chest. Samuel had spent his final months fighting a silent, losing battle against a predator he couldn't outrun, all while his own family treated him like a cash machine and me like an invisible nuisance.

"And Derek and Vivian?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm. "Are they working with Julian?"

"They're puppets," Pendelton replied bitterly. "Julian promised them a monthly stipend and a legal loophole to overturn your inheritance if they helped him pressure you into dropping the audit. They didn't care about the baby, Claire. They only cared about the money."

Marcus’s expression hardened into cold granite. "We need to move, Mrs. Hale. If Julian Vance is directly involved, local security is no longer enough. He has access to tactical squads and satellite intelligence feeds. We need to relocate you and the child to a secure federal safehouse immediately."

"No," I said firmly, standing up and resting my hands flat on the desk.

Marcus frowned. "Claire, staying here is a massive tactical risk. If Julian’s operatives made it past the perimeter once, they can try again with heavier ordnance."

"Let them try," I replied, a cold, unyielding fire igniting in my eyes. "If we run to a federal safehouse now, we look like frightened victims hiding in a hole. We go on the offensive. Arthur, you're going to help us lay a trap."

Pendelton looked up in sheer horror. "A trap? For Julian Vance? Are you insane? He’ll destroy us all!"

May you like

"He's already trying to," I retorted smoothly. "Now pick up your encrypted phone, Arthur. You're going to call Julian Vance and tell him the audit is being dropped—provided he meets you in person this afternoon to sign the release papers."
