Chapter 2 - The Audit and the Ashes

Vivian’s artificial smile shattered completely, the mask of a grieving, benevolent matriarch melting away to reveal the panicked, predatory vulture beneath.

"That’s... that’s impossible," Vivian stammered, her voice pitching up in genuine terror as she gripped Derek’s arm. "Samuel was the executive vice president! Hale Enterprises belongs to the Hale family trust! Our lawyers said—"

"Your lawyers lied to keep you from having a heart attack," I cut in sharply. "Or perhaps Samuel never told you the truth about who actually financed his lifestyle. Every car you drive, every society gala you host, every dime of your medical insurance—it was all backed by my personal accounts. And as of midnight last night, the corporate audit I initiated has frozen every remaining liquid asset tied to your names."

Derek lunged forward, his face contorted with fury, forgetting all pretense of polite society. "You lying bitch! You think you can freeze our accounts? I'll sue you into oblivion! I'll strip you of everything!"

Before Derek could cross the threshold, the heavy security gate at the foot of the driveway clicked open. A sleek, armored black sedan glided silently up the paved drive, coming to a halt right behind Derek’s luxury European coupe.

The rear door opened, and Marcus Vance—the chief legal liquidator and corporate restructuring attorney I had hired three years ago—stepped out onto the pavement. He adjusted his dark suit jacket, carrying a thick leather briefcase under his arm as he walked briskly toward the porch.

"Mrs. Hale," Marcus greeted me with a crisp, respectful nod, completely ignoring Derek and Vivian standing right in my path. "The federal forensic accountants have completed the preliminary sweep of the Hale family trust accounts. We found massive offshore discrepancies pointing directly to unauthorized personal withdrawals made by Mr. Derek Hale."

Derek spun around, pointing a trembling finger at Marcus. "Who the hell are you? You have no right—"

"I have every right, Mr. Hale," Marcus interrupted smoothly, pulling a crisp legal document from his briefcase and holding it up for them to see. "As of 9:00 AM this morning, a federal injunction has been issued against all personal properties, vehicles, and secondary trusts registered under your name. Your bank accounts are officially locked. Your credit cards are inactive. And your primary residence has been seized by the primary creditor—which happens to be Mrs. Claire Hale."

Vivian let out a sharp, choked gasp, her knees buckling slightly as she caught herself against the brick pillar of the porch. "Seized? Our home? But... we have galas next week! We have obligations!"

May you like

"Your only obligation right now is to vacate the premises within forty-eight hours," Marcus replied coldly. "Or face immediate eviction by county marshals."
