Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The sharp snap of crystal fracturing against the Italian marble echoed through the suddenly suffocating silence of The Grand Ballroom. Victoria Montgomery stared down at the wet, crimson puddle soaking into the hem of her silver couture gown, her chest rising and falling in shallow, panicked gasps. Around them, Chicago’s elite froze in place, champagne flutes suspended halfway to open mouths as the glittering facade of the Russo Foundation Gala dissolved into stark, dangerous reality.
Dominic’s gaze remained locked on the trembling woman before him, devoid of anger yet heavy with an icy finality that chilled the room faster than air conditioning.
“You ruined my life five years ago, Victoria,” Dominic said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the vast hall without a single raised inflection. “And tonight, you thought you could humiliate my wife to reclaim a seat you abandoned. You underestimated your own paper trail.”
Before Victoria could find her voice, a heavy-set man in an immaculate gray suit pushed through the paralyzed crowd. Judge Montgomery’s face had turned the color of spoiled ash as he caught his daughter by the arm, his eyes darting nervously toward Dominic and the towering security guards who now blocked every exit.
“Dominic, let’s not act hastily,” the judge stammered, his professional authority evaporating under the weight of the syndicate boss's steady glare. “There’s been a misunderstanding. Victoria was emotional, she didn't mean—”
“She meant every word, Judge,” Dominic interrupted, not even bothering to look at the older man. “Just as you meant to hand over my private ledger to the federal prosecutor in exchange for your federal appellate appointment. Leo has the wire transfers.”
Victoria shrank back against her father, finally realizing the terrifying magnitude of what had been uncovered. The room around them began to murmur nervously, guests quietly stepping away from the Montgomery family as if contagion clung to their skin.
Claraara stood silently beside her husband, feeling the heavy warmth of his tuxedo jacket draped across her shoulders. The coarse, rich wool effectively concealed the wine stain ruining the emerald silk of her gown, wrapping her in his scent of cedar and expensive amber. She looked at Victoria’s tear-streaked face and felt no triumph, only a cold, hollow realization of how fragile high society truly was when built on deception.
“Let’s go home, Claraara,” Dominic whispered softly, turning his attention entirely to her with a tenderness that completely contrasted with the ambient threat in the room.

He placed a gloved hand gently on the small of her back, guiding her away from the shattered glass and toward the private elevator. Leo Navaro stepped in to clear the path, parting the crowd like a dark tide. As the elevator doors slid shut, sealing out the whispers of Chicago's wealthiest spectators, Claraara stared at her reflection in the mirrored walls, knowing her quiet, ordinary life as an accountant was gone forever.
