Chapter 10 - The Foundation We Built

The evening air was warm and clear as Claraara stood on the stone balcony overlooking the illuminated gardens of the Russo estate, the city skyline of Chicago glittering like a field of scattered diamonds far in the distance. The federal prosecutors had already secured the indictments against Marcus and the New York syndicate directors using the safety deposit box evidence, while Judge Montgomery’s appellate career had officially ended in disgrace before the afternoon news cycle concluded.

Footsteps approached softly from behind, followed by the familiar, comforting weight of Dominic’s arms wrapping gently around her waist, pulling her back against his solid chest.

“The federal marshals have confirmed the New York board is completely dismantled,” Dominic whispered into her hair, his breath warm and steady. “The accounts are frozen, the properties are in receivership, and for the first time in ten years, there’s no shadow hanging over this house.”

Claraara leaned back against him, closing her eyes as she let out a long, slow breath that released the last remaining tension in her shoulders.

“It’s strange,” she murmured, resting her hands over his. “When you walked into my office two years ago, I thought my life was just a series of spreadsheets and quiet evenings alone. I never imagined any of this.”

“Neither did I,” Dominic admitted, turning her gently in his arms so she could look up into his dark, unwavering eyes. “I thought I was buying protection, Claraara. I thought our marriage was just another contract on a piece of paper to keep the federal agents off my back.”

“And now?” she asked, a soft, confident smile touching her lips as she searched his face.

“Now, it’s the only real thing I’ve ever owned,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a low, fierce conviction. He reached up, gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear before leaning down to press a tender, lingering kiss to her forehead. “The contract might have brought us together under false pretenses, but every choice we’ve made since then has been entirely our own. We stay right here, together, on our terms.”

Claraara smiled fully, wrapping her arms around his neck as the distant sounds of the city faded into the quiet peace of the estate grounds. They had survived the gala, the betrayal, and the ghosts of their past not by hiding behind wealth or intimidation, but by standing shoulder to shoulder with unwavering dignity. As the stars overhead shone down on Chicago, their true life together was only just beginning.
