Chapter 7 - The Syndicate's Envoy

The private reception room on the ground floor of the Russo estate was furnished with heavy velvet armchairs and a polished stone fireplace that remained unlit. Claraara stood near the bookshelf, partially concealed by the shadow of a dark mahogany pillar, watching as Leo escorted an unfamiliar man into the center of the room. The newcomer wore an immaculate charcoal suit that smelled faintly of expensive cigar smoke and airport terminals, his silver-streaked hair brushed back with absolute precision.

“Dominic,” the man said smoothly, offering a thin, humorless smile as he extended a hand that Dominic ignored completely. “It’s been quite a few years. Word travels fast in our circles when a federal judge’s career implodes over a misplaced ledger.”

“Save the pleasantries, Marcus,” Dominic replied coldly, remaining standing near the hearth with his hands resting casually inside his trouser pockets. “You didn't fly in from New York just to offer condolences on the Montgomery family’s legal troubles.”

Marcus lowered his hand without missing a beat, letting his sharp eyes dart briefly toward Claraara before returning to the syndicate boss.

“The board in New York is naturally concerned about what else might be written in those unredacted folios,” Marcus said, his tone dropping into a smooth, persuasive register. “Judge Montgomery was useful, but his daughter was careless. We are prepared to offer a clean severance of all remaining territorial claims in the Midwest if those specific routing numbers are quietly returned to our custody.”

Claraara watched Dominic closely, seeing the subtle shift in the muscles of his jaw. She knew the immense pressure the syndicate could bring to bear, the hidden threats that had forced her into this life two years ago in the first place.

“You think you can buy back your security with a handful of regional territory?” Dominic asked, his voice dangerously soft.

“We think,” Marcus corrected smoothly, taking a slow step forward, “that a married man with a brilliant forensic accountant for a wife has a great deal more to lose now than he did when he was standing alone. Bring the ledgers back into the fold, Dominic, and the past stays buried where it belongs.”

Claraara stepped out from the shadow of the pillar, her presence commanding immediate attention as she walked directly toward the center of the room.

“The past isn't buried, Mr. Marcus,” Claraara said, her voice steady and resonant in the quiet room. “It’s currently sitting on a secure server connected to federal regulatory agencies. If anything happens to Dominic, or to this estate, those files automatically publish to every major financial news outlet in the country. You didn't come here to negotiate a severance; you came here because you're terrified.”

Marcus’s polite facade cracked for a fraction of a second, revealing the cold panic beneath his tailored exterior as he realized the ordinary accountant was far more dangerous than he had been told.
