Chapter 2 - Sanctuary Behind Iron Gates

The heavy iron gates of the Russo estate swung closed behind the bulletproof town car, locking out the glittering chaos of downtown Chicago. Inside the expansive, dimly lit foyer, Claraara finally slipped off Dominic’s tuxedo jacket, letting it pool softly on the marble bench while she stared down at the stubborn stain of red wine drying on her emerald silk.

Dominic stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the courtyard, loosening his black silk tie with a slow, deliberate motion.

“You don't have to keep wearing that dress if it brings back bad memories,” he said, his voice low in the cavernous silence of the house.

“It’s not the dress I’m thinking about,” Claraara replied, her voice steady despite the adrenaline still humming through her veins. She crossed her arms, hugging herself against a sudden chill that had nothing to do with the night air. “You told the entire room I was your wife. Not your partner of convenience, not a temporary arrangement. Your wife.”

Dominic turned away from the glass, his dark eyes searching her face with an intensity that made her breath catch.

“Did I lie?” he asked quietly, stepping closer across the Persian rug.

“We both know what the contract says, Dominic. Five years of financial restructuring, discreet companionship, and absolute protection in exchange for twenty million dollars and a clean break.” Claraara met his gaze unflinchingly, though her heart hammered against her ribs. “Claiming me publicly changes the rules of the game. Now Victoria, her father, and every enemy you have in this city know exactly where to strike.”

“They knew nothing before tonight, and they have even less now,” Dominic said, stopping just inches away. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair from her cheek with a tenderness that completely belied his ruthless reputation. “Victoria thought she could break you because she measured worth by labels and runway sizes. She didn't realize she was dealing with a woman who built an empire out of numbers while everyone else was playing dress-up.”

Claraara looked up at him, struck by the genuine warmth in his dark eyes—the same warmth that had surprised her during those late-night ledger reviews in her downtown office two years ago.

“You planned this, didn't you?” she asked softly. “You knew about the leak before we walked into the ballroom.”

“Leo tracked the offshore routing yesterday,” Dominic admitted, a faint, humorless smile touching the corner of his mouth. “I intended to deal with the Montgomerys quietly tomorrow morning. But when she raised her hand against you, quiet became impossible.”

Before Claraara could process the weight of his confession, a sharp chime echoed from the security console near the study doors. Leo Navaro’s voice crackled through the intercom, reporting that Judge Montgomery had already initiated emergency damage control through municipal channels. Dominic’s expression hardened instantly, the softness vanishing as he stepped back, reminding Claraara of the dangerous world they inhabited together.
