Chapter 2 - The Fractured Foundation

The drive back to our house felt agonizingly long. The Guadalajara streetlights blurred through the windshield as the weight of Teresa’s words echoed relentlessly in my mind: He’s weak... Always has been... He folds just like his father did.
When I walked through our front door, Ricardo was sitting at the kitchen island with his head in his hands. The harsh overhead light caught the silver strands at his temples, making him look decades older than thirty-four. Sofía was asleep upstairs in our guest bedroom, under the care of a trusted family friend we had called earlier.
Ricardo looked up as the door clicked shut. His eyes were red-rimmed and hollow.
"Did you... did you talk to her?" he asked, his voice cracking.
I pulled my coat off, tossing it over the back of a chair, and placed my phone directly in the center of the marble island.
"I talked to her," I said evenly.
Ricardo stared at the phone. He didn't reach for it. He already knew. He knew his mother’s voice, her temperament, and the terrifying reach of her control.
"What did she say?" he whispered, staring down at the polished stone.
"She justified it, Ricardo," I replied, pulling out a chair and sitting opposite him. "She told me she disciplined you the exact same way. She called you weak. She said you fold under pressure because she broke your spirit when you were a child."
Ricardo flinched as if he had been physically struck. He pressed his palms against his face, a ragged sigh escaping his lips. "She... she hit me with heavy books. She locked me in the dark basement for hours if my grades weren't perfect. I thought... I thought it was normal. I thought that’s what made a man."
"It didn't make a man out of you, Ricardo," I said, my voice cutting through the silence with absolute clarity. "It made you terrified of her. And last night, your terror almost cost us our daughter."
His head snapped up, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes. "Sabrina, I'm sorry! I swear to God, I didn't know she would go that far! When I saw those marks on Sofía’s back... something broke inside me. I’m going to cut her off. We’ll change the locks, we’ll move, we’ll—"
"Words are cheap, Ricardo," I interrupted, sliding the phone closer to him. "Listen to the rest of what she said about you. Because if you want to save this marriage—if you want to be a father to Sofía—you need to hear how your mother views every single breath you take."
Before Ricardo could reach for the device, the harsh, jarring ring of his cell phone cut through the kitchen silence.

He looked down at the screen. The caller ID flashed: Mother.
