Chapter 6 - The Men in the Silver Sedan

The crunch of leather shoes on our gravel driveway signaled the approach of the two men in dark suits, their movements disciplined and entirely devoid of hesitation.
Teresa’s frantic, panicked expression instantly vanished, replaced by a smug, triumphant smirk. She stepped aside as the taller of the two men—a broad-shouldered individual with cold, graying hair and an unreadable expression—pushed past her onto the porch, stopping just inches from our front door.
"Ricardo Hale?" the man asked, his voice flat, professional, and chillingly devoid of emotion.
Ricardo instinctively shifted slightly in front of me, his jaw tightening. "Who wants to know?"
The man didn't answer verbally. Instead, he reached into his inner jacket pocket, pulled out a heavy, leather-bound folder with a gold-embossed seal, and flipped it open to display an official-looking document.
"I am Agent Vance from the federal corporate oversight division," the man said, though his eyes darted past Ricardo directly to me. "We have an emergency injunction issued twenty minutes ago regarding the Hale family holding accounts and associated subsidiaries. Mrs. Sabrina Hale, you are formally requested to accompany us for immediate questioning regarding unauthorized asset redistribution and corporate fraud."
A cold spike of adrenaline shot through my veins. Federal oversight division? The audit I triggered had only been filed an hour ago; standard federal response times for an initial forensic sweep took days, not minutes.
"That's impossible," I replied sharply, my voice cutting through the damp night air. "My legal team filed the preliminary audit papers under a secure seal. No federal agency has jurisdiction over this private restructuring yet."
The man—Vance—let out a dry, humorless chuckle. He stepped closer, ignoring the heavy brass safety chain still holding our door partially shut.
"Things move faster when powerful people are involved, Mrs. Hale," Vance said smoothly, his eyes flashing with a predatory gleam. "And your husband’s family happens to have deep, long-standing ties to people who don't appreciate having their financial pipelines frozen by an ambitious junior partner."
Ricardo’s face flushed with sudden rage. He slammed his hand against the doorframe. "She didn't commit any fraud! Every cent in those accounts was legally acquired through her own capital ventures! Get off my porch before I call the local authorities!"

Vance raised a single eyebrow, his expression turning icy. "Local authorities won't help you here, Mr. Hale. In fact, if Mrs. Hale refuses to come voluntarily, we have a federal warrant to secure all electronic devices and financial documents on these premises right now."
