Chapter 8 - The Hostage of Paperwork

The cold night air rushed into the hallway as Vance stepped over the splintered remains of our deadbolt, his hand resting casually near his jacket holster. Behind him, Teresa glided into the foyer, her smug, triumphant expression returning in full force as she looked around our home like a conqueror claiming fallen territory.
"I told you, Sabrina," Teresa sneered, her voice dripping with venom as she adjusted her fur coat. "You cannot outplay a dynasty. You thought you could strip me of my home, my status, and my money? You are nothing more than a transient parasite trying to wear clothes that don't fit."
I stood perfectly still beside the kitchen island, keeping my hands visible while my coat pocket securely concealed the critical evidence. "You broke your granddaughter's back with a belt, Teresa. You had her wear a trash bag because you're obsessed with a sick, warped image of perfection. No amount of money or federal corruption is ever going to wash that blood off your hands."
Teresa flinched, a flicker of genuine panic crossing her features before she masked it with a shrill laugh. "Lies! Desperate, pathetic lies invented to cover up your own inability to control your child!"
"Enough," Vance cut in sharply, stepping forward and slamming a thick manila folder onto the kitchen island right in front of us. He pulled out a single sheet of paper covered in dense legal jargon. "Mrs. Hale, here is the modified corporate waiver. Sign over all administrative control of the Hale family holding accounts back to the primary trustees, and this federal inquiry quietly disappears."
Ricardo stepped between Vance and me, his eyes blazing with a fury I had never seen in him before. "And if she doesn't sign?"
Vance smiled—a cold, humorless twitch of the lips. "Then we execute a full warrant. We seize every personal electronic device, freeze every personal savings account you own down to the last cent, and initiate immediate child protective custody proceedings for your daughter on grounds of unstable domestic environment."
The threat hung in the air like poison. They weren't just after the corporate accounts anymore; they were weaponizing the very trauma they had inflicted on Sofía to break us completely.
I looked down at the paper. Then I looked up at Vance, letting a slow, deliberate smile form on my lips.
"You think a piece of paper and a fake badge are going to frighten me?" I asked softly.
Vance’s smile faltered slightly. "It’s not a bluff, Mrs. Hale. Sign it."

"I won't sign a damn thing," I replied, my voice ringing clear and steady through the kitchen. "Because while you were standing here playing federal agent, my actual legal team was broadcasting the complete forensic audit—along with your illegal breach and Teresa’s child abuse medical reports—directly to the state attorney general's anticorruption task force."
