Chapter 5 - The Escalation

"You will do nothing, Teresa," I interrupted, my voice cutting through her threats with absolute finality. I kept my posture relaxed, leaning slightly against the doorframe to project complete control.

Teresa glared through the narrow gap, her fingernails clawing at the wooden edge of the door. "You think you’ve won some grand victory, you ungrateful little witch? You think freezing a few accounts and playing corporate games changes who we are? This family built this city! We have judges, politicians, and police commanders on speed dial! I will have you investigated, I will have your custody rights stripped for child endangerment, and I will tear your life apart piece by piece!"

"Go ahead," I replied calmly. "Call your judges. Call your police commanders. Let's see how fast they take your calls when they realize your estate is currently under a federal asset freeze for corporate tax evasion—an audit that my legal team triggered thirty minutes ago."

Teresa’s face drained of every drop of color. The furious, venomous glare in her eyes flickered, replaced for a split second by a flash of genuine, unadulterated panic.

"You... you didn't," she whispered, her voice cracking.

"Check your email, Teresa," I said, offering a thin, cold smile. "Your lawyers should have received the notification right around the time you stepped into your taxi."

Before Teresa could scream another threat, a heavy pair of footsteps echoed down our hallway behind me. Ricardo stepped into the entryway, standing right beside me. He didn't hide. He didn't look down. For the first time in our marriage, he stood tall, his shoulders back, looking at his mother not with the fear of a terrified child, but with the cold detachment of an adult cutting a cancer out of his life.

"It's over, Mother," Ricardo said, his voice steady and low. "You will never see Sofía again. You will never step foot in our home again. And if you ever contact us or my wife again, I will personally hand every financial record of your illegal offshore accounts to the district attorney."

Teresa stared at her son through the gap in the door, her mouth opening and closing as if she had just been stabbed by her own shadow. "Ricardo... you... you dare speak to me like that? After everything I sacrificed for you?"

"You didn't sacrifice anything, Mom," Ricardo answered, his voice devoid of emotion. "You just used me to keep your own ego alive. Leave."

Teresa opened her mouth to shriek another curse, but before a sound could escape her lips, the headlights of the silver sedan idling at our curb suddenly flashed a blinding white.

The rear door of the sedan swung open, and two men in dark, nondescript suits stepped out onto our driveway, walking with deliberate, heavy strides directly toward our porch.
