Chapter 1 - The Weight of Scars

The sharp flash of a camera shutter cut through the suffocating silence of the courtroom like a scalpel. Reporters leaned forward in their gallery seats, their whispered conversations buzzing like angry hornets. For a moment, the heavy mahogany courtroom felt impossibly small, every eye pinned to the pale, undeniable map of survival carved across my skin.

Jason’s face, moments ago flushed with smug triumph, had gone the color of spoiled milk. He took an involuntary half-step back, his hand dropping away from Madison’s arm as if my scars were radioactive.

"Judge," Jason’s attorney blurted out, springing to his feet with sudden, panicked urgency. "This—this is an egregious breach of protocol. Physical injuries from a domestic incident years prior have no bearing on a civil divorce proceeding regarding asset distribution and corporate holding rights! We move for an immediate strike from the record!"

Judge Evelyn Vance didn't blink. She kept her gaze locked on me, her expression a mix of judicial gravity and profound shock. She raised a single hand, silencing Jason’s lawyer with a mere flick of her fingers.

"Sit down, counselor," Judge Vance instructed, her voice cutting through the noise with absolute authority. She looked back down at me. "Mrs. Mitchell, you have introduced evidence of severe physical trauma under the doctrine of criminal concealment and asset forfeiture exception. Do you wish to amend your petition from a standard civil dissolution to a formal criminal tort?"

My hands remained flat against the polished oak table. I didn't tremble. I didn't look back at Jason, who was now sweating through his custom-tailored suit.

"I do, Your Honor," I said clearly. "And I am asking the court to freeze all current assets of Mitchell Medical Technologies effective immediately."

"Objection!" Jason shouted, his voice cracking. He broke past the defense table, his composure entirely shattered. "Your Honor, she's lying! She got those scars in a domestic accident before we were even married! She fell—she tripped! It has nothing to do with the company!"

Daniel Brooks, my attorney, finally stood up, sliding a thick, leather-bound folder across the table toward the judge’s bench.

"Not according to the original police report filed at St. Jude Hospital ten years ago, Your Honor," Daniel stated smoothly. "A report that was mysteriously expunged from municipal archives the exact week Mr. Mitchell secured his first venture capital injection—an injection funded entirely by my client's inheritance, which she signed over under physical duress while still recovering from reconstructive surgery."

Madison let out a sharp gasp, clutching her white dress as if she might faint. "Jason... what is he talking about?"

Jason didn't answer her. He stared at me, his eyes wide with a terror that money couldn't buy. Because he suddenly realized that the quiet, compliant wife he thought he had buried in the shadows hadn't been defeated at all.

She had simply been waiting for the statute of limitations to expire on the one crime he thought he had successfully hidden.
