Chapter 2 - The House of Cards

The court recess lasted exactly twenty minutes, but by the time Judge Vance banged her gavel to reconvene, the gallery looked like a war zone of legal scavengers. Reporters were typing furiously on their phones, live-streaming updates to national news outlets, while Jason sat frozen at the defense table, whispering frantic, hissed commands to a pale-faced attorney who looked ready to quit.
"Resume the record," Judge Vance said, adjusting her glasses. "In light of the supplemental medical files and the recovered police affidavits submitted by Mr. Brooks, this court finds probable cause to issue an emergency freeze on all personal and corporate assets tied to Jason Mitchell and Mitchell Medical Technologies."
A collective gasp rippled through the gallery.
Jason slammed both fists onto the table. "You can't do that! That company is publicly traded on paper! Our quarterly medical device patents—our international distribution contracts—they'll collapse within twenty-four hours!"
"Then you should have thought about that before you forged your wife's signature on the initial incorporation waiver while she was in a hospital bed," Judge Vance replied coldly. "All assets are frozen pending a federal forensic audit. Court is adjourned until tomorrow morning at nine."
Before the gavel could even finish echoing, Jason lunged toward the plaintiff's table.
"Iris! Stop this right now!" he snarled, his voice trembling with rage as he grabbed the edge of the wood just inches from my hands. "You think you're smart? You think a few old scars are going to ruin everything I've built? I made you! Without me, you'd still be rotting in that hospital!"
I didn't flinch. I slowly picked up my gray coat, draped it back over my shoulders, and looked him straight in the eye.
"You didn't make me, Jason," I whispered, loud enough only for him and Madison to hear. "You just taught me how much pain a person can endure before they stop caring about losing everything."
Madison scurried up behind him, her face flushed with humiliation. "Jason, come on. Don't make a scene. Let's just call our lawyers..."
"Shut up, Madison!" Jason roared, turning his fury on her. "This is all your fault! You pushed me to fast-track the divorce so we could buy that estate in Palm Beach!"
I didn't stick around to watch them tear each other apart. Accompanied by Daniel, I walked down the grand marble steps of the courthouse into the crisp afternoon air. Flashbulbs blinded me momentarily, reporters shouting questions from all directions.
Mrs. Mitchell! Is it true your husband embezzled your family's inheritance? Did he cause those injuries?
I kept my head down, sliding into the back of Daniel’s waiting town car.
As the door clicked shut and we pulled away from the curb, Daniel let out a long, exhausted breath, turning to look at me with newfound respect.
"Well," Daniel murmured, shaking his head. "That went better than expected. But Iris... once the federal auditors open those books tonight, they aren't just going to find financial fraud. They're going to find what's hidden in the overseas accounts."
I stared out the tinted window at the towering glass facade of Mitchell Medical Technologies shimmering in the distance.

"Let them look," I said quietly. "Jason thought he owned the empire. But he forgot who actually holds the keys to the vault."
