Chapter 4 - The Federal Trap

Jason froze in the doorway, his eyes darting from my calm posture to the open wall safe and the documents spread across his desk. The drunken haze in his eyes evaporated instantly, replaced by sheer, unadulterated panic.

"You... you called them," Jason whispered, backing up a step as Agent Miller of the FBI White-Collar Division stepped past him into the study, flanked by two armed federal marshals.

"Mr. Jason Mitchell," Agent Miller announced crisply, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his tactical belt. "You are under arrest for securities fraud, corporate identity theft, obstruction of justice, and the suppression of federal safety violations."

"This is insane!" Jason shouted, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak as he tried to dart toward the hallway.

The two marshals moved with practiced speed, tackling him cleanly to the imported Italian rug and pinning his arms behind his back.

"You can't do this!" Jason roared, his face pressed against the floor as the cuffs snapped shut around his wrists. "I'm a pillar of this community! I'm a billionaire medical innovator! Iris, tell them! Tell them you're just a bitter, unstable ex-wife making things up!"

I stood up slowly from the mahogany desk, picking up my father’s notebook and sliding it securely into my leather handbag. I walked over until I stood right above him, looking down at the man who had spent a decade treating my life like disposable collateral.

"You always called me fragile, Jason," I said softly, my voice cutting through his frantic screams. "You thought scars meant weakness. But you forgot something very important."

Jason glared up at me, his eyes bloodshot and filled with venom. "What?"

"Scars only form where a wound has fully healed," I replied. "And mine have made me unbreakable."

Agent Miller hoisted Jason up by his arms, hauling him toward the penthouse elevator as he continued to curse and thrash uselessly against them. As the elevator doors slid open and swallowed him into custody, the apartment finally felt quiet. Truly quiet. For the first time in ten years, the ghosts haunting these walls were finally laid to rest.

My phone buzzed in my hand.

It was a text message from Daniel Brooks.

The federal prosecutors just accepted the expanded indictment. But there's a problem, Iris. Madison Brooks just filed an emergency motion claiming she owns fifty percent of Mitchell Medical's offshore holdings under a secret corporate proxy.

I stared at the screen, a cold, sharp smile touching the corners of my lips.

Madison thought she was the clever mistress walking away with the prize. She didn't realize she had just chained herself to a sinking ship.
