Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of Shadows

The courtroom was packed tighter than it had been during the initial divorce hearing. Word of the criminal indictments and the corporate collapse of Mitchell Medical Technologies had spread through Wall Street like wildfire. Financial journalists and federal investigators filled the gallery seats, whispering among themselves as Daniel and I took our seats at the plaintiff's table.

Judge Vance didn't waste time with pleasantries. She sat down, adjusted her glasses, and looked out over the room with severe, unyielding eyes.

"Before this court hears arguments regarding the federal asset forfeiture and corporate receivership," Judge Vance began, her voice echoing clearly off the wood paneling, "we have an urgent emergency petition filed thirty minutes ago by Vanguard Bio-Research’s original board of trustees, represented by counsel."

A ripple of confusion swept through the gallery. Several defense attorneys representing Jason’s corporate board members exchanged panicked glances.

Daniel leaned over to me, whispering quietly. "Vanguard Bio-Research? Iris, your father’s old company was legally dissolved ten years ago after the acquisition."

"Not dissolved," I corrected softly, pulling a weathered manila folder from my leather handbag. "Dormant. My father anticipated Jason’s hostile takeover months before he died. He transferred the core intellectual property and patent rights into an irrevocable survivor trust that Jason’s corporate lawyers never knew existed."

Judge Vance tapped her gavel twice. "Mr. Brooks, please step forward with your client."

I stood up, smoothing the front of my black wool coat, and walked up to the podium alongside Daniel.

"Your Honor," Daniel stated clearly, handing a thick sheaf of parchment to the court clerk. "We are petitioning the court for an immediate emergency injunction to transfer all assets, patents, and operational control of Mitchell Medical Technologies back to its original parent entity, Vanguard Bio-Research, under victim restitution and fraudulent acquisition statutes."

Across the aisle, Jason’s corporate defense team—three high-priced attorneys flown in from Manhattan—jumped to their feet in unison.

"Objection, Your Honor!" lead counsel shouted, sweating profusely under his collar. "That would nullify billions of dollars in active public stock, international distribution agreements, and active medical supply contracts! It would trigger a catastrophic market collapse across the entire healthcare sector!"

Judge Vance looked down at the corporate lawyer, her expression cold and unimpressed.

"Counsel," the judge said softly, her voice carrying a lethal edge, "your client built a multi-billion-dollar empire on a foundation of corporate identity theft, medical trial falsification, and the suspected murder of a senior research scientist. The market should have collapsed years ago."

The lawyer swallowed hard, opening his mouth to argue further, but Judge Vance cut him off with a single wave of her hand.

"The petition for emergency asset transfer to Vanguard Bio-Research is granted," Judge Vance ruled, striking her gavel with a sharp, definitive crack. "Effective immediately. Court is adjourned until tomorrow morning for the federal sentencing guidelines."
