Chapter 10 - The 1984 Registry

The damp basement air suddenly felt suffocatingly thin.

Ethan stared at the yellowed birth certificate resting on the metal desk, the letters blurring slightly beneath the harsh overhead work light. His heart skipped a beat, a cold wave of disorientation washing over him.

“My birth certificate?” Ethan repeated, his voice hollow and disbelieving. “That’s impossible. I was born at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago. My parents raised me here my entire life.”

“Look at the attending physician’s signature, Ethan,” Eleanor instructed quietly, sliding the document a few inches closer.

Ethan looked down. Scrawled across the bottom line in sharp, jagged cursive was the signature of Dr. Harrison Vance—the exact same corrupt estate doctor who had signed Aunt Beatrice’s fraudulent competency papers back in 1974.

Chloe stepped closer, her hands trembling as she read the marginal notes handwritten in Margaret’s familiar, precise ink along the side of the registry page: Child acquired via private trust transfer, November 14, 1984. Biological lineage sealed under probate court order #449-B. True identity suppressed to protect estate succession.

“She didn't just raise you, Ethan,” Chloe whispered, the color draining entirely from her face as the horrifying truth settled over her. “She acquired you. Just like she tried to acquire control over Sarah, just like she tried to erase Aunt Beatrice.”

Ethan staggered back a step, gripping the edge of the metal filing cabinet to steady himself. All his life, he had defended his mother’s coldness as eccentric perfectionism. He had believed he was part of an elite, untouchable family dynasty built on hard work and generational success.

Instead, he was just another managed asset in Margaret’s elaborate, decades-long game of psychological control and corporate theft.

Before Ethan could process the full weight of the revelation, the secure satellite phone in Eleanor’s coat pocket emitted a sharp, high-pitched double-beep.

Eleanor pulled the receiver out, pressed answer, and listened for five tense seconds as an analyst spoke rapidly on the other end. Her expression tightened into a hard, unyielding mask.

“What is it?” Ethan asked, his voice shaking with a mix of fury and confusion.

Eleanor lowered the phone slowly, her eyes fixed on the open iron safe behind them. “That was the federal records bureau in Washington. They just cross-referenced the serial number on the 1984 trust transfer ledger.”

She paused, letting the silence build in the damp basement before delivering the final, devastating blow.

“Margaret didn’t just forge your adoption papers, Ethan,” Eleanor said evenly. “The trust fund that financed Calloway Logistics—and the shell company currently trying to execute a hostile takeover of Sarah’s family estate—was originally funded by a multi-million-dollar inheritance left to the sole surviving heir of an entirely different family... a family whose entire household was wiped out in a suspicious Lake Michigan boat fire in the autumn of 1984.”
