Chapter 4 - The 1974 Ledger

Chloe stepped up the stairs, stopping two feet away from Margaret. She didn't yell; she spoke with the terrifying calm of someone delivering a death sentence.

"Inside Beatrice’s ring box wasn't just her jewelry," Chloe said, pulling out a folded piece of heavy parchment covered in neat, looping handwriting. "It was a signed confession from the estate doctor in 1974, detailing how you drugged Beatrice with identical sedatives to declare her legally incompetent right before grandfather’s will was rewritten."

Margaret’s lips parted, but no words came out. She pressed her back against the wallpaper, her hands trembling violently.

"You didn't just ruin Beatrice’s life and drive her away, Mother," Chloe continued, her voice rising with righteous fury. "You used the exact same playbook on her that you’re using on Sarah right now. Slow poisoning, engineered psychosis, isolation, and total control over the estate accounts."

Ethan walked up the stairs behind his sister, holding his phone out so the live recording of Margaret drugging Sarah played on a continuous loop in the quiet hallway.

"It stops today," Ethan said, his voice dropping into an unyielding ultimatum. "You are going to pack your bags, sign over your shares of the family trust to independent receivership, and walk out of this house before I call the state police and hand them both files—Sarah’s poisoning and Beatrice’s probate fraud."

Margaret stared at her two children, realizing that her empire of manipulation had finally collapsed under the weight of its own lies. For a long, agonizing moment, silence hung heavy in the hallway.

Then, a slow, chilling smile crept across Margaret’s face. She didn't look defeated; she looked like a gambler who had one final, catastrophic card up her sleeve.

"You think you’ve won, don't you, my brilliant children?" Margaret whispered softly, her eyes gleaming with manic triumph. "You think calling the police or threatening me with old probate papers will save Sarah?"

Ethan’s stomach plummeted. "What are you talking about?"

Margaret reached into her pocket, pulled out a small, encrypted key fob, and pressed a single red button.
