Chapter 6 - The Air Bubble

The harsh, mechanical whine of the intravenous pump filled the silence of the bedroom like a ticking bomb.

Ethan’s thumb stayed clamped hard over the plastic tubing, preventing the microscopic air bubble visible in the clear line from reaching Sarah’s catheter. His breathing came in ragged, shallow gasps, his knuckles turning stark white under the fluorescent light of the nursery monitor.

“Chloe, don’t touch the manual release,” Ethan rasped, his voice tight with panic. “If you hit the master reset button without clearing the secondary chamber, the automated safety valve will flush the entire line straight into her vein.”

Chloe hovered over the IV tower, her hands trembling uncontrollably as she stared at the flashing red warning display. The digital readout blinked a sterile, terrifying warning: OVERRIDE ACTIVE. SYSTEM LOCKDOWN IN 30 SECONDS.

“She’s dropping, Ethan!” Chloe cried out, pointing frantically to the heart monitor. Sarah’s pulse line was flattening, her lips losing what little color they had left as her chest remained frighteningly still under the floral blanket. “We don’t have thirty seconds! If we don’t pull the needle out right now, the embolism will hit her heart!”

Without waiting for permission, Chloe lunged forward with absolute, desperate instinct. She jammed her thumb onto the emergency mechanical disconnect valve, snapping the plastic housing apart just as the machine gave a final, mournful beep and shut down entirely.

A sharp hiss of displaced air escaped the severed tubing.

Ethan pulled the catheter tape free from Sarah’s bruised arm, pressing a sterile gauze pad firmly over the puncture wound. They both stood frozen, holding their breath, staring down at Sarah’s pale face.

Ten agonizing seconds passed.

Then, Sarah’s back arched slightly against the pillows. She let out a sudden, violent gasp of air, her eyes flying open in sheer terror as she clawed blindly at the blankets.

“I’ve got you, Sarah. You’re safe,” Ethan whispered, dropping to his knees beside the bed and wrapping his arms gently around her shaking shoulders. “I’ve got you.”

Chloe exhaled a long, shuddering breath, wiping a tear from her cheek before her expression hardened into cold steel. She looked toward the open bedroom door down the quiet hallway, where the faint sound of a car engine starting echoed through the front windows.

“She’s getting away,” Chloe said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register.
