Chapter 3 - Chloe’s Arrival

The sharp crunch of gravel in the driveway announced the arrival of a second vehicle. Headlights swept across the second-story windows as a sleek black sedan slammed to a halt near the front portico.
Moments later, heavy, determined footsteps echoed on the front porch, followed by a sharp, rhythmic pounding on the heavy oak front door.
Margaret spun around, her eyes wide with panic as she realized her tight grip on the household was shattering into a million pieces. "Don't you dare let her in," Margaret rasped, grabbing Ethan’s arm with trembling fingers. "She knows nothing. She was a child when Beatrice left!"
"She was old enough to remember what you did to the jewelry box, Mother," Ethan said coldly, brushing her hand away.
He walked down the stairs and unlocked the front door. Chloe stood on the porch, her trench coat soaked from the morning mist, her face pale and taut with a mixture of grief and long-suppressed fury. She didn't say a word as she brushed past him into the foyer, clutching a thick, yellowed leather folder bound with cracked silk ribbon.
"Is she upstairs?" Chloe asked, her voice shaking slightly.
"In her room, sedated," Ethan replied grimly. "Sarah is sleeping, but she’s breathing."
Chloe marched straight toward the grand staircase, but Margaret was already waiting at the top landing, her posture rigid, her face transformed into a mask of icy defiance.
"Chloe, don't you dare take another step into this house," Margaret commanded, her voice ringing out with decades of inherited authority. "You have no right—"
"I have every right, Mother," Chloe interrupted, her voice cutting through the hall like a razor blade. She pulled the cracked silk ribbon off the leather folder and flipped it open, revealing a collection of fading photographs, legal affidavits, and a handwritten diary entry dated August 14, 1974. "I spent the last three hours going through Aunt Beatrice’s safe deposit box in Boston. Do you know what else I found inside her antique wedding ring box, hidden behind the velvet lining?"

Margaret’s eyes locked onto the folder in Chloe’s hands, and for the first time in her life, the matriarch looked genuinely terrified.
