Chapter 18 - Descent into the Sub-Basement

The private service elevator descended past the forty floors of polished glass and steel, plunging straight down into the subterranean levels of the Caldwell Meridian tower where the primary server arrays hummed in the dark, cold quiet.
When the doors slid open, the air smelled sharply of ozone and heated copper. The emergency fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting a sickly greenish hue across the endless rows of black server racks.
I kept my hand firmly tucked inside my coat, gripping the burner phone and the compact security badge Margaret had encoded for me. Every shadow between the server columns looked like a threat, every hum of a cooling fan like a whispered warning.
At the end of aisle four, huddled in front of the master routing terminal, was a figure in a dark maintenance uniform.
The figure froze as my boots crunched against the concrete floor. Slowly, the person stood up and turned around.
It wasn't a stranger. It was Marcus’s former deputy head of physical security—a man named Thomas who had supposedly been vetted and cleared by internal HR two weeks ago.
"You shouldn't have come down here alone, Mrs. Caldwell," Thomas said smoothly, his hands resting casually near his utility belt, where a heavy-duty wrench gleamed under the flickering lights. "The sub-basement isn't covered by the penthouse smart panels. No cameras. No emergency lockdowns to trip."
"You're still feeding Von Hindenburg's secondary syndicate," I said, keeping my voice steady while my heart hammered against my ribs. I took a slow, calculated step backward toward the main elevator foyer, keeping my eyes locked on his hands. "The data packets aren't coming from Switzerland. They're coming from a receiver hidden right here in the building."
Thomas let out a cold, humorless chuckle. "Von Hindenburg had backup plans for his backup plans. You thought cutting off Julian and David would kill the hydra. But the core extraction is already running. By midnight, every single line of our quantum encryption code will be uploaded to an offshore node in Reykjavik."
May you like
He took a step forward, his fingers curling around the handle of the heavy wrench.
"And since you're down here to witness a tragic maintenance accident," Thomas smiled darkly, "we can just say you slipped on a wet floor near the cooling lines."
