Chapter 20 - The Unseen Architect

Back upstairs in the executive suite, the digital panic alarms had been reset, but the atmosphere in the corner office remained charged with an intense, unyielding gravity.
Margaret stood by the window, watching the police transport vans pull away from the tower entrance below. She turned around as I walked in, her eyes sharp and assessing.
"Thomas is talking," Margaret said quietly. "He gave up the local intermediary who funded his sub-basement access. It wasn't just a corporate operative in Zurich. There's a domestic holding company funneling capital straight through a trust registered right here in Manhattan."
"Whose trust?" I asked, stepping up to the desk and leaning against the polished wood.
Margaret slid a printed legal dossier across the table. I looked down at the name on the foundational deed—a name I hadn't heard spoken aloud since the first day I stepped foot into this corporation.
"Adrian's uncle," Margaret said, her voice dropping to a harsh, sorrowful whisper. "My late husband's estranged brother, who was legally bought out of the company twenty-five years ago and swore he would destroy everything we built if it ever reached a billion-dollar valuation."
I stared at the name on the paper, the final puzzle piece locking into place with terrifying clarity. The attack wasn't just a hostile takeover by external raiders or a simple case of corporate greed. It was a decades-old family blood feud playing out across boardrooms and high-rise penthouses.
Before I could answer, my phone buzzed on the desk with a new, unencrypted message from an unknown local IP address—a single line of text accompanied by a live GPS coordinate in upper Manhattan:
He's waiting for you at the old server warehouse in Queens. Come alone, or the final backup gets wiped.
Margaret looked at the screen, her face draining of all color. "It's a trap."
May you like
"I know," I said quietly, reaching into my coat to pull out the keys to the town car. "Which is why we're not going alone."
