Chapter 4 - The Leverage

The penthouse walls seemed to close in around us.
"You work for Vane Capital?" Adrian stared at his head of security, the realization draining every drop of color from his face. "You've been feeding them internal updates from day one?"
"I built your security detail, Adrian," Marcus said with a chilling calmness. "Do you really think a startup like yours could afford me on a standard salary? Vane has been positioning themselves to swallow Caldwell Meridian whole since the Series B round. You were just the useful face they put on the billboards."
My hand instinctively went to my stomach. The twins gave a sharp, rolling kick, reacting to the adrenaline surging through my bloodstream.
I looked at Adrian. All his arrogance, all his glossy success in the Grand Marlow ballroom, had been nothing more than a mask worn by a man who had sold his soul to masters he didn't even recognize until it was too late. He hadn't built an empire; he had built a gilded cage, and Marcus was the warden.
"The flash drive, Mrs. Caldwell," Marcus said, raising the silenced weapon slightly, pointing it straight at Adrian's chest. "Hand it over, and walk back into the master suite. Let's not make this messy."
"Don't do it, Lauren," Adrian whispered, his eyes locked on the barrel of the gun. "The drive has the encryption keys to the offshore accounts. If they get those, we have nothing left. Not the money, not the evidence, nothing."
"And if I don't give it to you?" I asked Marcus, keeping my voice terrifyingly calm.
Marcus smiled, a thin, humorless stretching of his lips. "Then your husband dies right here on the Italian marble floor. And the police report will state that a distraught, hormonal woman, overwhelmed by financial ruin, suffered a psychotic break, shot her husband, and then tragically lost her pregnancy in the ensuing struggle."
The horror of it hit me with the force of a physical blow. It wasn't just a financial conspiracy; it was a complete erasure. They had planned the narrative before I had even walked out of the ballroom.
I looked at the flash drive. Then I looked at Adrian, who was staring at me with a mixture of desperate apology and profound shame.
This was the man who had danced with Vanessa Cole while I stood pregnant and humiliated. This was the man who had lied to me, risked our family, and traded our security for corporate vanity.
And yet, as I stood there in the quiet penthouse, I knew I wasn't going to hand over the drive.
Because the real leverage wasn't the forty million dollars.

It was something Adrian didn't even know I had taken from his office safe three days ago.
