Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Vernon Hale

The holding cell in the lower level of the Manhattan federal precinct smelled of disinfectant, damp concrete, and the bitter copper tang of pure panic.

Dr. Vernon Hale sat on the edge of the bolted steel bench, his pristine bespoke gray suit wrinkled, his silver hair uncombed, and his rimless glasses resting crookedly on his nose. The confident, untouchable private physician of New York's elite had vanished, replaced by a desperate, cornered man waiting for a hammer to fall.

The heavy steel door buzzed, clicked, and swung open.

Daniel Cross walked into the room, his long trench coat unbuttoned, carrying a slim leather portfolio. He didn't sit down immediately. He stood by the small metal table, looking down at Hale with cold, flat eyes.

“You can’t hold me like this,” Hale muttered, his voice trembling as he tried to project an air of authority that no longer existed. “I have rights to legal representation. I want my attorney present before answering any questions regarding professional licensing or patient care.”

“Your attorney is currently sitting in a holding cell three blocks away, Vernon,” Daniel said smoothly, pulling out a chair and sitting down. “Turns out when federal investigators subpoenaed your firm’s offshore accounts, they found a nice little recurring wire transfer from Mark Sterling’s shell company dating back five years to the exact week of the Pier 17 explosion.”

Hale’s throat bobbed as he swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the security camera mounted in the corner. “It’s a retainer. For expert medical consultation on maritime logistics.”

“Right,” Daniel said, opening the portfolio and sliding a single piece of paper across the metal table. “And this? Is this a medical consultation too?”

Hale glanced down. It was a certified manifest from a boutique pharmaceutical laboratory in Zurich, detailing the precise chemical composition of the neurotoxin eye drops Hale had administered every Thursday morning at 7:00 AM sharp.

“That formula was patented under my clinical research license,” Hale stammered, his facade completely cracking. “It was designed to manage post-traumatic ocular nerve spasms. It wasn't meant to cause permanent blindness; it was a therapeutic suppressant!”

“A suppressant that required a signature from a dead man and a shell company in the Caymans to keep hidden from the state medical board?” Daniel leaned forward, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. “You didn't treat Grant Mercer, Vernon. You kept him prisoner inside his own skull for five years so Sterling could loot his empire piece by piece.”

“Grant can’t prove intent,” Hale snapped back, panic overriding his caution. “The medical logs show I followed standard recovery protocols for thermal trauma patients! Without an independent baseline scan from day one, it’s just my word against his—”

“Except it isn't,” a cold, measured voice echoed from the doorway.

The heavy steel door pushed open wider. Grant Mercer walked into the holding cell.

He wasn't wearing dark glasses. His eyes—clear, piercing, and entirely unobstructed—locked onto Vernon Hale with a predatory intensity that made the doctor shrink back against the concrete wall.

Hale stared up at him, his face draining of every last drop of color. “Grant... you... your eyes... you’re looking right at me.”

“For five years, Vernon, I sat in the dark because you told me the sun was gone,” Grant said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stopped two feet from the table. “Every Thursday morning, you smiled in my face, shook my hand, and dropped poison into my eyes while you lied to my soul.”

“I was protecting you,” Hale whimpered, raising a trembling hand. “Sterling forced me—he threatened my career, my family—”

“You didn't protect anyone,” Grant interrupted, slamming his hand down onto the metal table with a sharp bang that made Hale jump in terror. “You were a hired gun in a white coat. And now, your medical license, your freedom, and your future are finished.”

Daniel stood up, snapping the portfolio shut. “The district attorney is pressing maximum charges. Conspiracy to commit corporate sabotage, criminal poisoning, and aggravated assault resulting in permanent disability. You’ll have plenty of time to practice your 'recovery protocols' in a federal penitentiary, Vernon.”

As Daniel and Grant turned toward the door, Hale lunged forward, grabbing the edge of the table. “Grant! Wait! Let’s talk about this! I can give you names—I can tell you who planted the explosive device at Pier 17!”

Grant stopped at the threshold, turning his head back just enough to look at the trembling doctor over his shoulder.

“Keep your secrets, Vernon,” Grant said quietly. “I already know everything I need to know.”
