Chapter 9 - The Zurich Boardroom

The penthouse conference room of Meridian Global overlooked the glittering, rain-slicked financial district of Zurich, Switzerland.

Inside, three senior directors sat around a massive, black-marble boardroom table, their faces illuminated by the pale glow of digital tickers flashing falling stock prices for Mercer Shipping.

At the head of the table sat Viktor Vance—a heavy-set, silver-haired man with cold gray eyes and an expensive cigar pinched between his fingers. He blew a thick ring of blue smoke toward the ceiling, looking entirely unconcerned.

“Dr. Hale’s arrest was a clumsy complication,” Viktor muttered in a thick European accent, leaning back in his leather chair. “Mark Sterling panicked like a cornered rat.”

“The American federal prosecutors are already seizing Sterling’s domestic assets,” one of the junior directors warned nervously, tapping his pen against the marble. “If the New York SEC uncovers the Meridian routing codes by Monday morning, our entire European portfolio could be frozen under international money laundering statutes.”

“They won't,” Viktor said dismissively, flicking ash into a crystal tray. “Mercer is a blind man stumbling around a dark house. Even if he regained partial sight, he doesn't have the international clearance or the banking contacts to pierce our Swiss privacy walls before the weekend liquidation is complete. By Monday, Mercer Shipping will be ours.”

Click.

The heavy oak double doors of the penthouse conference room slowly swung open.

Viktor frowned, turning his head toward the entrance. “I gave strict instructions that no housekeeping or catering staff were to disturb us—”

He stopped dead.

Walking through the doors wasn't a custodian.

Grant Mercer strode into the boardroom, flanked by two towering Swiss federal police officers in full tactical gear and local banking magistrates bearing official high-court seals.

Grant wore a sharp obsidian suit, his hair neatly combed, his eyes clear, bright, and fixed entirely upon Viktor Vance. He didn't carry a cane. He didn't hesitate. He walked with the terrifying, unstoppable momentum of an avalanche.

Viktor surged to his feet, the cigar slipping from his fingers and rolling across the marble floor. “What is the meaning of this? This is a private corporate floor! You have no jurisdiction here!”

“Jurisdiction?” Grant asked smoothly, stopping three feet from the marble table. He reached into his inner coat pocket, pulled out a thick, official document bearing the gold seal of the Swiss Federal Banking Commission, and tossed it down onto the table right in front of Viktor’s trembling hands. “Article 47 of the Swiss Banking Act permits immediate asset freezing in cases of suspected criminal conspiracy, industrial sabotage, and illicit terrorist-adjacent financing.”

Viktor stared down at the document, his face turning an ash-gray color. “This... this is impossible. You were blind! You were locked away—”

“And you were arrogant enough to think a caged animal wouldn't figure out how to break the bars,” Grant interrupted, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register. “Your cousin Vernon is currently singing like a canary in a federal holding cell in Manhattan, Viktor. He gave us every ledger, every routing code, and every offshore account tied to Meridian Global.”

The two junior directors bolted from their chairs, frantically grabbing their briefcases toward the side exit, but the Swiss officers stepped forward, blocking the doorway with automatic precision.

“Sit down,” one of the officers commanded in German-accented English.

Viktor swallowed hard, sweat beading across his forehead as he looked around the room, realizing every single exit was sealed. The trap had sprung with absolute, flawless perfection.

Grant leaned over the marble table, bringing his face inches from Viktor’s.

“You wanted my empire, Viktor?” Grant whispered softly, his eyes blazing with cold fire. “Welcome to your liquidation.”
