Chapter 8 - The Syndicate’s Shadow

The private terminal at Teterboro Airport was quiet at midnight, save for the low, steady whine of jet engines idling on the tarmac.

Grant stepped down from his private armored town car, his dark coat snapping in the sharp autumn wind, followed closely by Daniel Cross and two federal agents in plainclothes.

“The asset transfer was routed through a shell entity named Meridian Global,” Daniel explained, tapping rapidly on a secure digital tablet as they walked toward the hangar. “It’s not just Mark Sterling. Sterling was a front man for a much larger consortium of international shipping conglomerates based out of Zurich and Singapore.”

“They’re trying to force a hostile liquidation while the company’s voting shares are temporarily frozen by the federal receivership,” Grant said, his voice cold and analytical.

“Exactly,” Daniel agreed. “If they complete the asset sweep before the New York Stock Exchange opens on Monday morning, Meridian Global will own fifty-one percent of Mercer Shipping for pennies on the dollar.”

Grant stopped dead in his tracks beside the gleaming fuselage of his private jet. He looked out across the dark expanse of the runway, watching a red warning light blink rhythmically in the distance.

For five years, they had tried to break him. When blinding him wasn't enough, they had tried to strip away his company, his legacy, and his future while he sat helpless in the dark.

They still didn't understand the man they were fighting.

“We aren't waiting until Monday,” Grant said quietly.

Daniel paused, looking up from his tablet. “What do you mean?”

“We’re going to Zurich.”

Daniel stared at him in disbelief. “Grant, the board meeting isn't until next week, and international financial regulators require—”

“I don't care about regulators right now, Daniel,” Grant interrupted, turning to face him with a gaze that brooked no argument. “Meridian Global operates out of a private Swiss holding firm controlled by a man named Viktor Vance—Vernon Hale’s cousin and the primary financial architect behind the Pier 17 bombing. If we hit them on their own turf while they’re still scrambling to cover up Hale’s arrest, we can freeze their European assets before the markets open.”

A slow, hard grin spread across Daniel’s face. He snapped his tablet shut. “I’ll call the pilot. File the flight plan for Zurich immediately.”

“Wait,” Daniel added, pausing as a thought hit him. “What about the mansion? What about Hannah and Lucy?”

Grant’s expression softened for a fraction of a second as he thought of the little girl with the yellow flashlight and the woman who had brought light back into his tomb.

“They stay behind security lock down at the estate,” Grant said firmly. “I’m leaving a full tactical detail under your command, Daniel. Nobody gets within a mile of that house while I’m gone.”

“Understood,” Daniel nodded.

Grant turned back toward the jet stairs, pausing once to look up at the vast, star-filled New York sky. The darkness no longer felt like a prison. It was just a space waiting to be conquered.

“Let’s go hunting,” Grant said, and climbed aboard.
