Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Mansion

The heavy velvet drape rustled nervously before slowly parting, revealing Elena. The veteran housekeeper stepped out into the bright light of the foyer, her hands clasped tightly in front of her apron, her face pale and etched with residual shock. She didn't look at Michael, who was still slumped against the wood-paneled wall, gasping for air and clutching his bruised ribs. Her eyes were fixed entirely on Jonathan and the little girl in his arms.

“Mr. Vance... I swear to God, I didn't know he was going to snap like that tonight,” Elena stammered, her voice trembling as she rushed forward, kneeling beside Victoria’s motionless body. She carefully pressed two fingers against Victoria’s carotid artery, letting out a shaky breath of relief. “She has a pulse, Mr. Vance! It’s weak, but she’s still breathing!”

“Get the heavy wool blanket from the front closet and help me lift her,” Jonathan commanded, his tone leaving no room for argument. He carefully transferred Mia into the corner of the grand staircase, resting her safely against the carpeted risers. “Mia, stay right here, sweetie. Don't look over here. Look at me—keep your eyes on my face. Uncle Jonathan is right here.”

Mia nodded numbly, her small hands clutching the hem of her dress as she focused entirely on her uncle.

Elena scrambled to her feet, sprinting toward the hallway closet and returning a second later with a thick, plush woolen throw. Together, she and Jonathan carefully hoisted Victoria’s frail, broken body onto the makeshift stretcher, wrapping her in the blanket to protect her from the jagged glass shards littering the marble floor.

As they lifted her, Michael let out a ragged, pathetic laugh from his position on the floor. He wiped a streak of blood from his lip, glaring up at Jonathan with a twisted, manic grin.

“You think you’ve won, don't you, Jonathan?” Michael wheezed, coughing weakly. “You take her to the hospital, you call the police, you wave your fancy federal warrants around. But you can't touch my corporate empire. The board is entirely in my pocket. By morning, my legal team will have injunctions slapped on every single account you think you control. You’ll be fighting me in civil court for the next ten years while I walk free on bail!”

Jonathan paused, carrying Victoria’s shoulders while Elena supported her feet. He turned his head slowly, looking down at Michael with an expression of profound pity that stung the executive far worse than any physical blow could have.

“Michael, you still don't understand the game you were playing,” Jonathan said quietly. “You thought you were playing corporate chess with the Vance family. But while you were busy stealing millions from a trust fund, you forgot who actually owned the underlying debt on your primary manufacturing plants.”

Michael’s triumphant grin vanished instantly, replaced by a cold, sudden dread. “What... what are you talking about?”

“I bought your primary creditors out three weeks ago,” Jonathan replied with a chilling, deadpan calm. “As of ten minutes ago, my automated legal team filed a complete corporate liquidation notice across all your subsidiaries. By the time the sun comes up tomorrow morning, your bank accounts won't just be frozen—they’ll be seized. Your mansions, your cars, your offshore accounts, your company stocks—everything you built on lies and stolen blood is mine. You’re entirely bankrupt, Michael. And you’re going to spend the rest of your natural life behind concrete bars.”

Michael let out a choked, desperate sound, lunging forward as if to attack, but his legs betrayed him, and he collapsed back onto the hard marble floor, beating his fists against the stone in absolute, helpless fury.

“Get her to the SUV, Elena,” Jonathan ordered, turning his back on the broken man.

As they carried Victoria out through the shattered double doors into the cool night air, leaving Michael howling in the empty, ruined foyer, a new kind of storm was just beginning to gather outside.
