Chapter 8 - Whispers in the ICU

The hum of the medical equipment in Intensive Care Unit Room 4 was the only sound breaking the heavy silence of the afternoon. Victoria lay motionless in the adjustable hospital bed, her head wrapped in clean white gauze, her pale face illuminated by the soft glow of the heart monitor tracing steady, rhythmic green lines across the screen.
Jonathan stood beside the bed, gently holding his sister’s limp, cool hand in his own large palm. His thumb brushed softly over her knuckles, remembering the vibrant, brilliant woman she had been before Michael slowly chipped away at her spirit, her confidence, and her freedom.
“You’re going to wake up, Vic,” Jonathan murmured softly, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion. “You hear me? Michael is gone. He’s locked away where he can never touch you or Mia again. The empire he built on lies is burning to the ground. You just focus on healing.”
From the doorway of the ICU room, a soft knock echoed against the glass partition.
Jonathan turned his head to see Dr. Alistair Vance standing there, holding a fresh clipboard with updated neurological scans. Jonathan gently laid his sister’s hand back down on the blanket, stepped away from the bedside, and walked out into the private hallway, pulling the door closed behind him.
“Any change, Alistair?” Jonathan asked immediately, scanning the surgeon’s face for any sign of hope.
The doctor offered a cautious, measured nod. “Her intracranial pressure has dropped significantly over the last six hours, Jonathan. That’s the best news we could ask for. The swelling in her temporal lobe is subsiding on its own without requiring secondary surgical intervention.”
A massive wave of relief washed over Jonathan, though he kept his guard up. “Is she close to waking from the coma?”
“Her brain activity is spiking in patterns that suggest she’s hovering right on the edge of consciousness,” Dr. Alistair explained, tapping his pen against the clipboard. “She might start responding to voice stimuli within the next twelve to twenty-four hours. When she does, she’s going to be extremely disoriented, confused, and likely in a lot of pain. You need to prepare yourself for the fact that her memory of the assault might be fragmented at first.”
“I don't care if her memory is fragmented,” Jonathan said firmly, his eyes flashing with fierce determination. “As long as she’s alive, as long as she’s breathing, we have everything we need.”
“There is one more thing,” the doctor added, his voice dropping into a more serious tone. “While reviewing her preliminary blood panels from last night’s admission, our toxicologists ran an expanded metabolic screen. Given the nature of the violent altercation and her sudden loss of consciousness before the physical impact even occurred... we found trace anomalies in her bloodstream.”
Jonathan’s brow furrowed sharply, a cold spike of suspicion piercing his chest. “Anomalies? What kind of anomalies?”
“Sedatives,” Dr. Alistair said quietly. “High-grade pharmaceutical-grade benzodiazepines, administered in a steady, low-dose regimen over the past several weeks. It wasn't enough to kill her, Jonathan. But it was more than enough to keep her chronically lethargic, confused, and emotionally subdued—explaining why she hadn't attempted to pack her bags and leave months ago.”
Jonathan’s fists clenched so tightly at his sides that his knuckles turned stark white. Michael hadn't just beaten and terrorized his wife; he had been systematically poisoning her system behind closed doors to break her will completely. The fury burning inside Jonathan threatened to boil over, but he forced himself to stay calm. The monster was already in a federal cell, but the depth of his depravity was still uncovering new depths of evil.
“Keep those toxicology reports locked in your personal safe,” Jonathan ordered coldly. “Hand them directly to federal prosecutor Miller when he arrives this afternoon. I want every single drop of chemical poisoning added to the indictment.”
“Already secured,” the doctor nodded, turning down the hallway.

As Jonathan walked back toward the waiting area to check on little Mia, his phone buzzed violently in his pocket with an encrypted priority alert from his private security firm overseas.
