Chapter 9 - The Overseas Ghost

Jonathan pulled his phone from his pocket, his thumb swiping across the encrypted interface to unlock the priority message. The screen flashed a high-priority alert originating from Zurich, accompanied by a digital data packet containing encrypted bank transfer logs and international flight manifests.
He stepped into a quiet, deserted alcove near the nurses' station to review the transmission, his eyes scanning the glowing text in the dim light.
The report came from his top-tier intelligence operative stationed in Europe. It confirmed Detective Thomas’s worst fears: Michael Sterling had indeed established a secondary, unmonitored escape hatch—an offshore shell corporation named Vanguard Holdings Ltd., registered in a non-extradition tax haven in the Caribbean, backed by a staggering eighty million dollars in liquid funds siphoned quietly over the past three years. More alarmingly, the system logs showed an automated transfer trigger set to execute a massive wire movement and secure a private charter flight to South America—*unless* a specific master encryption key was entered into a secure terminal every forty-eight hours.
And the next automated execution window was ticking down fast: less than fourteen hours remaining.
Jonathan’s jaw tightened into an iron vise. If that automated transfer went through before federal prosecutors could seize the international accounts, Michael would still have a multi-million-dollar fortune waiting for him the moment he somehow managed to claw his way out of federal custody, or worse, his hidden co-conspirators on the outside would use the funds to mount a retaliatory strike.
He needed the master encryption key. And there was only one place on earth where that key was physically stored: inside the ultra-secure, biometric-locked titanium wall safe hidden behind the executive bookshelf in Michael’s downtown penthouse office—an office that was currently sealed off and guarded by local precinct detectives awaiting a federal search warrant.
Jonathan didn't hesitate. He tapped his phone, placing an immediate encrypted call to his head of security, Marcus.
“Marcus,” Jonathan barked the moment the line connected, his voice cold and authoritative. “Drop whatever you’re doing at the precinct. I need you and the tactical team at Michael’s downtown penthouse office within twenty minutes.”
“Mr. Vance, the building is locked down by federal marshals and local police,” Marcus’s voice crackled through the encrypted speaker. “Getting inside without a signed federal access order is practically impossible without triggering a perimeter breach.”
“I don't care about the federal paperwork right now,” Jonathan interrupted, his tone leaving absolutely zero room for argument. “Michael has an automated eighty-million-dollar offshore wire transfer executing in less than fourteen hours. If that money clears, his outside associates will use it to tear our lives apart. The master encryption key to stop it is sitting in his private office safe right now. Find a way in, bypass the biometric lock, and get me that key—quietly.”
“Understood, Mr. Vance,” Marcus replied sharply. “We’re moving in now.”
Jonathan hung up the phone, slipping it back into his pocket as he turned around to head back to the waiting area. But as he stepped out of the alcove, he froze dead in his tracks.

Standing at the edge of the hallway, clutching her small blanket and looking up at him with big, intelligent, unblinking eyes, was little Mia.
