Chapter 7 - The Detective’s Ledger

Detective Thomas Vance—no relation to Jonathan, though people often remarked on their similar intensity—approached with slow, heavy strides. He flipped open a small leather notebook, his eyes shifting from Jonathan to the sleeping child across the room, and finally to Elena, who sat rigidly on her bench.
“Mr. Vance,” the detective greeted quietly, pocketing his pen. “I just came from the precinct holding cells. Your former brother-in-law is throwing quite the tantrum down there. He’s demanding a phone call, screaming about his constitutional rights, and threatening to sue the city, the police department, and everyone in between.”
Jonathan let out a short, dry laugh that held no humor whatsoever. “Let him scream. A man who spent years silencing his own family is going to find out real quick how little his voice matters in a federal holding cell.”
“Oh, his voice won't matter much longer once the forensic accountants finish tearing through his private server,” Detective Thomas remarked, pulling a folded printout from his coat pocket and handing it to Jonathan. “We found something hidden in the master bedroom safe during the search this morning—something that goes far beyond simple embezzlement or domestic abuse.”
Jonathan unfolded the paper, his eyes scanning the dense columns of figures and corporate letterheads. As he read, the cold fury in his eyes deepened into something far darker.
“Blackmail,” Jonathan whispered, reading a name highlighted in yellow near the bottom of the ledger. “He wasn't just siphoning money from the trust... he was extorting the other board members using private surveillance footage from their own homes.”
“Exactly,” Detective Thomas nodded grimly. “Michael wasn't just a brutal husband; he was running a criminal syndicate disguised as a philanthropic corporation. The board members who helped lock you out of the trust months ago? They didn't do it because they believed in his vision. They did it because Michael had dirt on every single one of them. Once our cyber-crime unit decrypts the rest of those hard drives, half the corporate elite in New York are going down right alongside him.”
Elena gasped softly from her bench, her hands flying to her mouth as she realized the sheer scale of the monster she had unknowingly served for five years. “My God... all those late-night meetings in his private study, the locked server room in the basement... I thought he was just working late on portfolio mergers.”
“He was working on protecting his cage,” Jonathan said, folding the printout and sliding it into his pocket. He looked down at Detective Thomas. “Does the district attorney have everything they need to secure an immediate, unappealable indictment?”
“We have enough to keep him behind bars until he’s an old man,” Detective Thomas confirmed. “But there’s one more thing you should know, Mr. Vance. Before they slapped the cuffs on him last night, Michael muttered something to the arresting officer—something strange that didn't make sense at the time, but given what we just found in the safe, it might be a threat you need to take seriously.”
Jonathan’s posture stiffened instantly. “What did he say?”
“He looked right past the officers, straight at the security cameras in the foyer,” Detective Thomas said, his voice dropping into a grave whisper. “He said: ‘Even if they take my money, even if they take my house, my safety net outside the country will ensure nobody ever collects a dime of it.’ We checked his passport logs. He has a secondary offshore shell corporation registered in a non-extradition country under a completely fabricated identity, backed by a massive liquidity fund that hasn't been frozen yet.”

Jonathan’s jaw tightened into a rigid line. Michael might be locked in a cell, but a wounded animal with hidden teeth could still bite from the shadows. And Jonathan wasn't going to leave a single loose end untied.
