Chapter 10 - The Price of Safety

The seconds ticked by like agonizing hours. Muffled shouts, the heavy thud of boots running across the floorboards downstairs, and the sporadic, terrifying pop of suppressed gunfire reverberated through the thick walls of the master suite.

Maya was sobbing quietly into my neck, her small body trembling violently with every loud noise from below. I sat huddled on the floor behind the heavy mahogany desk, rocking her back and forth, praying silently to any god that would listen.

Please let him survive. Please don't let us lose him too.

Suddenly, the electronic deadbolts on the heavy oak door clicked.

My heart leapt into my throat. I grabbed a heavy brass paperweight from the desk, raising it defensively as my eyes locked onto the door handle.

Was it Julian's security team? Or had the extraction team breached the second-floor stairwell?

The handle slowly turned down.

The door creaked open, revealing a tall, imposing figure stepping into the dim light of the suite.

It was Julian.

His white dress shirt was spattered with dark smudges and dust, his knuckles were bruised and bleeding, and a shallow crimson scratch ran along the side of his jawline. But in his right hand, he held a sleek tactical submachine gun pointed safely downward, his posture radiating the terrifying, triumphant energy of a man who had just cleared a house of hostile intruders.

"Clara," Julian breathed out, rushing across the room and dropping to his knees beside us. He threw his weapon aside and immediately pulled Maya and me into a crushing, desperate embrace. "Are you alright? Did anyone get in here?"

"We're fine! We're fine!" I sobbed, throwing my arms around his neck, burying my face in his dusty shoulder. "Are you hurt? There was shooting—"

"It's over," Julian murmured, kissing the top of my head while holding us both as if he would never let go. "Marcus and his extraction team neutralized all four operatives in the foyer. Local Italian carabiniere are already securing the perimeter and sweeping the grounds. The threat is contained."

I pulled back slightly, staring at him in sheer disbelief. "You fought them off? By yourself?"

A tired, wry smile touched his bruised lips. "Never underestimate a former naval intelligence officer who has a very good reason to protect his family."

His family.

The words hung in the air between us, sweet and heavy with a reality we hadn't yet dared to speak aloud.

Ten minutes later, the villa was bathed in the flashing blue and red lights of Italian police cruisers parked outside in the courtyard. Sirens wailed softly in the distance, and medical personnel were tending to minor scrapes downstairs.

Julian, Maya, and I sat together on the velvet sofa in the master suite while Elena brought Leo into the room, sleeping peacefully through the entire aftermath.

Julian looked across the room at me, his gray eyes shining with an emotion that transcended gratitude, trauma, or circumstance.

"So," Julian said softly, reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of hair away from my face. "What happens now, Clara? You're safe. Your cousin Luca is safe. The syndicate has been intercepted by federal and international authorities. You don't have to run anymore."

I looked down at Maya, who had finally fallen asleep against my shoulder, completely exhausted by the ordeal. Then I looked up into Julian’s steady, unwavering eyes.

The €274 in my canvas bag felt light, distant, and insignificant. The terrifying leap into the unknown had brought us across an ocean, straight into the arms of a grieving billionaire who needed us just as desperately as we needed him.

"I guess," I whispered, a slow, genuine smile breaking across my face for the first time in days, "we start figuring out what it means to finally have a home."

Julian’s hand slid down to take mine, his fingers lacing tightly with mine in an unbreakable grip.

"Good," he said, smiling back. "Because I'm not letting you go anywhere."
