Chapter 9 - Breach at the Villa

The air inside the master suite went completely dead.

Maya dropped her croissant, her eyes widening in terror as she looked from Marcus’s grim face to mine. I rushed across the room, scooping her up into my arms and pulling her tightly against my chest.

"Who?" Julian demanded, his voice dropping into a lethal, commanding growl as he instantly stepped in front of us, shielding us with his broad shoulders. "Local police? Media? Or them?"

"Professionals, sir," Marcus reported rapidly, tapping a ruggedized tactical tablet in his hand. "Thermal imaging shows a four-man extraction team scaling the rear stone wall near the citrus orchard. They bypassed the external motion sensors using localized signal spoofers. They're moving fast, and they're heavily armed."

"How did they find us this fast?" I gasped, panic threatening to choke me. "We've only been here an hour!"

"They didn't track the villa," Julian said, his jaw tightening into a slab of granite. "They tracked Marcus's secure transport vehicles when we left the airport. Professional syndicates have spotters at every major transit hub in Europe."

He turned to Marcus with absolute, cold authority. "Initiate lockdown protocol Omega. Seal all reinforced shutters on the ground floor. Move the safe-room security detail to the eastern corridor. And bring me my tactical case from the armory."

"Sir, with all due respect, you shouldn't—" Marcus started to argue.

"Do it, Marcus!" Julian snapped, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings with a terrifying command presence that left zero room for debate.

Marcus nodded sharply, turned on his heel, and sprinted out of the room, slamming the heavy oak door behind him and throwing the electronic deadbolts into place.

I held Maya so tightly she let out a small squeak of discomfort. I loosened my grip slightly, kissing her forehead. "It's okay, baby. Close your eyes and put your head on my shoulder. Don't look."

Julian turned back to us, his expression a mix of fierce determination and profound apology. He reached out, his hand gently cupping the side of my face. His skin was warm, his thumb brushing away a stray tear I hadn't realized I'd shed.

"I promised you that nobody would touch you," Julian said softly, his gray eyes locking onto mine with unwavering strength. "I intend to keep that promise."

"Julian, it's too dangerous," I whispered, my voice shaking. "If they're professionals... they're going to kill everyone here. We shouldn't have come with you."

"Listen to me, Clara," Julian said, his voice firm and absolute. "I didn't survive thirty years in global shipping and two tours in naval intelligence before taking over my father’s empire by letting a bunch of low-level debt collectors walk into my home. Stay in this room. Elena is right outside the adjoining nursery with Leo. If anything happens to me—if anything gets past my security team—there is a hidden panic button behind the painting of the Roman colosseum on the wall. Push it. It opens a reinforced subterranean escape tunnel leading directly to the vineyards outside the perimeter."

"What?" I gasped. "Escape tunnel? Julian, what are you going to do?"

Before he could answer, a muffled, concussive thud echoed from somewhere downstairs—followed by the sharp, unmistakable crack of a suppressed firearm silencer.

Gunfire inside the villa.

Julian’s face hardened into a mask of pure, unadulterated combat readiness. He grabbed a heavy iron fireplace poker from the hearth, ripped off his dress shirt cuffs to free his forearms, and turned toward the door.

"Stay here," he ordered one last time.

And then he stepped out into the hallway, closing the heavy oak door behind him, leaving Maya and me alone in the terrifying silence of the storm.
