Chapter 7 - The Safe House on Via Appia Antica

The black Maybach didn't pull over to the shoulder of the highway; instead, Marcus executed a sharp, controlled turn down a secluded, cypress-lined side road flanked by ancient stone walls and overgrown Roman pines. The car rolled to a silent stop behind a massive iron security gate that automatically swung open as we approached, revealing a sprawling, secluded nineteenth-century villa hidden behind thick greenery.

"Get the girls inside the safe room," Julian ordered Marcus the moment the car parked in the shaded courtyard. His tone brooked no argument. "Activate full digital jamming protocols on all local frequencies. Nobody enters or leaves this perimeter without my explicit authorization."

"Understood, sir," Marcus replied instantly, opening the rear door and ushering Maya and me out of the vehicle with calm, professional urgency.

"Wait, what's happening?" Maya whimpered, grabbing onto the hem of my jacket as she looked up at the towering stone villa. "Clara, why are we here? Are we in trouble?"

"No, sweetie, we're just visiting a very safe place with nice people," I lied, forcing a shaky smile onto my face while my heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird.

Julian stepped out of the car, handing Leo—who was still blissfully asleep—to a female security operative who had hurried out from the villa’s double doors. Julian strode directly toward me, his phone pressed to his ear, barking rapid commands to someone back in Boston.

"Trace that message," Julian ordered into the phone as he walked. "Route the metadata through our secure servers. I want a geographic lock on the sender within five minutes. I don't care if they're pinging from a burner phone in Ohio or a café in downtown Rome. Find them."

He hung up and turned his full, intense focus onto me.

"Clara, look at me," Julian said, taking me firmly by the shoulders. His gray eyes were burning with fierce determination. "Did you tell anyone—anyone at all—that you were going to stay with your cousin Luca?"

"No!" I protested, shaking my head frantically. "I didn't tell a soul! I didn't even know for sure if Luca was still living in Rome until I looked up his old address on my phone two nights ago!"

"Then they didn't track your communications," Julian deduced instantly, his analytical mind clicking pieces into place with terrifying speed. "They tracked your financial trail. Did you use a credit card or debit card linked to your father's or your personal bank accounts to purchase those plane tickets?"

The blood drained from my face.

"The... the emergency cash in the cereal box," I stammered, my memory racing back to the chaotic night we fled. "It was mostly paper bills, but... but I had to buy the tickets online using my old debit card because cash wasn't accepted on the airline's website for international routes departing within six hours..."

Julian let out a sharp breath, closing his eyes for a second. "Rookie mistake, but understandable under pressure. Your debit card pinged the airline’s database, and corporate travel aggregators feed directly into commercial data brokers. Anyone with enough money and the right illegal connections could pull your passenger manifest within minutes of booking."

"They know we're in Rome," I whispered, tears of helpless frustration finally spilling over my lashes. "They know about Luca. What if they go to his apartment? What if they hurt him?"

"They won't reach your cousin," Julian promised, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, terrifying certainty. "Marcus already has a team en route to Luca’s address to secure him and relocate him before anyone even sniffs around his neighborhood. You and Maya are locked down in a fortress right now. Nobody touches you."

He turned to the female operative standing nearby holding Leo. "Get Ms. Vance and her sister settled in the master suite on the second floor. Ensure they have everything they need. I'll be in the comms room."

Before I could say another word, Julian turned on his heel and strode toward a reinforced steel door at the side of the courtyard, disappearing into the belly of the villa to wage war on our behalf.
