Chapter 5 - Landing in the Eternal City

The "Fasten Seatbelt" sign chimed across the cabin, flashing in bright red letters. Outside the thick airplane windows, the endless expanse of blue ocean gave way to the rolling golden hills of the Italian countryside, dotted with terracotta-roofed farmhouses and winding olive groves.

Maya pressed her face against the glass, gasping in wonder as the Mediterranean sun glinted off the aircraft's wing. For a brief, magical moment, all the terror and trauma of the past week vanished, replaced by the innocent awe of a three-year-old child seeing Europe for the very first time.

I felt a bittersweet ache in my chest. I had brought her here to save her, but Julian’s words echoed relentlessly in my mind: Running across borders only buys you time, not safety.

"Clara," Julian’s deep voice pulled me out of my spiraling thoughts. He was adjusting Leo into a sleek, ergonomic baby carrier strapped securely across his broad chest. He reached into the inner pocket of his charcoal jacket and pulled out a sleek black leather cardholder.

"What are you doing?" I asked, eyeing him suspiciously.

"Giving you a lifeline," Julian answered calmly. He extracted a heavy, embossed business card and slid it across the tray table toward me.

I looked down at it. Embossed in silver lettering was: Julian Vance — CEO, Vance Global Logistics, followed by a private direct phone number and an encrypted email address. Below that, he had quickly scribbled a series of digits in sharp black ink.

"What is this number?" I asked, my brow furrowing.

"That is the direct contact for my private security chief stationed here in Rome," Julian said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "When we land, you and Maya are not taking a subway to some overcrowded cousin's apartment where you'll be vulnerable. My car is taking you directly to a secure residence on the Via Appia Antica. You'll stay there until my legal and security teams run background checks on your family's creditors and completely neutralize any threat."

I stared at the card as if it were radioactive. "Mr. Vance—Julian—I can't accept this. I don't even know you. I can't take charity from a stranger."

"It's not charity, Clara," Julian said, his gray eyes softening as he reached out and gently placed his hand over mine resting on the table. His touch was warm, solid, and impossibly grounding. "You saved my son's life today. You walked into a first-class cabin full of hostile strangers, took a screaming baby from a grieving, incompetent father, and brought peace back into my world. Allowing me to make sure you and your sister are safe is the least I can do."

"But—"

"No buts," Julian interrupted gently, withdrawing his hand as the landing gear locked into place with a heavy, mechanical thud. "My security team is already coordinating with airport tarmac clearance. We’re deplaning through the private VIP exit before the commercial terminal doors even open. You're coming with me, Clara. End of discussion."

The sheer force of his will was staggering. It wasn't arrogance; it was the protective, unyielding instinct of a man who commanded legions, now laser-focused on keeping us safe.

As the Boeing 777 touched down on the Fiumicino tarmac with a smooth, effortless screech of tires, the cabin erupted into the polite rustle of passengers unbuckling seatbelts and retrieving overhead luggage.

Julian stood up, securing Leo tightly against his chest, and offered his hand to Maya, who grabbed it without a second thought, looking up at him as if he were a superhero out of a storybook.

He turned his gaze back to me, extending his other hand down the aisle.

"Ready to face Rome, Clara?" he asked, a faint, reassuring smile touching his lips.

I took a deep breath, feeling the heavy, suffocating weight of the past four days begin to lift just a fraction. I grabbed my canvas bag, placed my hand in Julian’s strong grip, and stepped forward into the next chapter of our uncertain lives.

Little did I know, the moment we walked out that private VIP exit onto the sunlit Italian tarmac, a black Mercedes sedan was waiting—and inside it was a figure from my family's dark past who had tracked us all the way across the Atlantic.
