Chapter 1 - The Accountant's Secret Ledger

The steel door of the safe-room clicked shut behind Marco with a heavy, muffled thud, leaving Gabriel alone in the warm, dim silence with his nephew and the sleeping woman who had defied an empire to save him. Gabriel remained on one knee beside the leather sectional, his fingers hovering inches above Mia Carver’s bruised wrist. The silence of the room was thick, broken only by the soft, steady rhythm of baby Leo’s breathing against Mia’s chest. For thirty-two years, Gabriel had lived in a world defined by ledgers, leverage, and lethal precision. Every action had an equal and opposite reaction; every debt was paid in full. Yet looking at Mia—an unassuming payroll accountant who had memorized insurance invoices from three years ago and broken free from a cartel safehouse using a dad-gifted lockpick set—he realized his entire operational model had just been upended.

He reached out gently, his calloused fingertips brushing a stray lock of brown hair away from her forehead. Her skin was warm, flushed with the feverish heat of exhaustion, but her brow furrowed slightly at his touch, a soft murmur escaping her lips. She was dreaming of the warehouse, of the rain on Wacker Drive, of the moment the delivery van door had slammed shut. Gabriel felt a sudden, cold spike of fury pierce through his chest. Damian Sterling thought he could strike at a Romano child and walk away. Sterling thought the Romano family was weakened because Daniel was gone.

"You have no idea what you just unlocked," Gabriel whispered into the dark room, his eyes fixed on Mia's bruised knuckles.

Slowly, carefully, so as not to wake the infant, Gabriel slid his arms under Leo, lifting the baby from Mia’s chest. For a split second, Mia’s fingers tightened instinctively around the empty air where the child had been, her eyes fluttering open in a panicked blur.

"Don't," Gabriel murmured, pulling Leo against his own broad shoulder. "I've got him, Mia. You're safe."

Recognizing his voice, or perhaps sensing the shift in gravity, Mia didn't fight. Her eyes closed again, her head sinking back into the leather cushion as sleep reclaimed her ragged nervous system. Gabriel carried Leo over to the plush armchair across the room, sitting down and pressing his face against his nephew’s soft, sweet-smelling hair. The baby shifted, sighed, and settled back into a deep slumber.

Ten minutes later, the door clicked open again, and Marco slipped back inside, holding a thick, encrypted tactical tablet in one hand and a secure burner phone in the other. His eyes went immediately to Gabriel holding the baby.

"How is she?" Marco asked in a low voice.

"Out cold," Gabriel replied without looking up. "What did our people find at the warehouse?"

"A mess," Marco said, walking over and handing the tablet to Gabriel. "Sterling’s cleaning crew got there five minutes after our vanguard arrived, but they left plenty behind in their haste. Look at file three."

Gabriel tapped the screen. The high-resolution photos showed the interior of the storage office where Mia and Leo had been held. There were splintered chairs, blood on the concrete floor from the guard Mia had struck with the fire extinguisher, and a heavy iron desk pushed against the wall. But what caught Gabriel’s eye wasn't the violence of the escape; it was what had been left sitting on the edge of the desk.

A leather-bound ledger. Not a Romano financial book, and not one belonging to Sterling’s logistics front.

"What is that?" Gabriel asked, his brow furrowing.

"That’s why they grabbed her," Marco said grimly. "We thought she was just an accountant caught in the wrong van during the storm. But according to our internal network checks, Mia wasn't just auditing our shipping manifests last week. She was auditing Sterling’s shell companies through a blind secondary clearinghouse we didn't even know existed."

Gabriel stared at the screen, the pieces clicking into a terrifying, intricate pattern. "She wasn't a random target. Sterling knew she was onto his offshore accounts."

"Worse," Marco added, leaning against the back of the sofa. "She didn't just find the discrepancies. She downloaded the master decryption keys onto her personal flash drive before she got into the motorcade this afternoon."

Gabriel looked back across the room toward the leather sectional where Mia lay breathing softly under the wool blanket. She wasn't just a quiet payroll clerk who knew her way around an insurance invoice. She was sitting on the digital bomb that could obliterate Damian Sterling’s entire financial empire—and she had carried it inside her pocket through an entire kidnapping, a warehouse interrogation, and a high-speed crash through a wooden barrier.

"Does Sterling know she has the keys?" Gabriel asked, his voice dropping an octave.

"Not yet," Marco said. "His men think she’s just a frightened civilian who got lucky. If they find out what’s on her personal drive, they won't stop until they tear this entire city apart to find her."

Gabriel stood up slowly, cradling Leo in one arm while his other hand closed tightly around the edge of the tablet. The protective instinct that had driven him to guard his dead brother's son now expanded, wrapping around the bruised, exhausted woman sleeping across the room with a fierce, unbreakable grip.

"Let them look," Gabriel said quietly, his eyes cold as glass. "Because by sunrise, we're going hunting."
