Chapter 9 - The Drake Hotel Gala

Two miles south, inside the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel, the crystal chandeliers shone with blinding brilliance, illuminating hundreds of Chicago’s elite, local judges, corporate executives, and political donors sipping champagne and listening to a live string quartet.

On the elevated dais at the front of the room, Senator Robert Vance stood behind a mahogany podium, smiling warmly as he delivered a soaring speech about law, enforcement integrity, and the future of regional infrastructure development.

"For thirty years, my family has dedicated its life to protecting the hardworking citizens of Illinois," Robert proclaimed, his voice ringing with practiced, statesmanlike charisma through the sound system. "We believe in accountability. We believe in transparency. And above all, we believe that the rule of law must never be compromised by corruption or—"

The heavy oak double doors at the back of the grand ballroom didn't just open.

They shattered inward with a splintering crash that echoed above the string quartet's melody.

The music stopped instantly. A collective gasp rippled through the hundreds of impeccably dressed guests as twenty armed men in dark tactical suits poured silently into the ballroom, fanning out along the perimeter walls and cutting off every exit.

In the center of the aisle stood Gabriel Romano.

He wasn't wearing a tuxedo. He wore his heavy black overcoat, rain-slicked and unbuttoned, his face a mask of cold, terrifying granite. Behind him walked four of his most trusted enforcers, their eyes locked dead on the stage.

Senator Vance stopped mid-sentence, his hand freezing on the edge of the podium. The color drained from his face as he recognized the man walking down the center aisle.

"Mr... Mr. Romano," Robert stammered, forcing an uneasy, diplomatic smile as he gripped the sides of the podium. "I believe there’s been some mistake. This is a private charity gala for the judicial relief fund. If you're here to discuss port logistics—"

Gabriel stopped ten feet from the base of the stage. He slowly unbuttoned his leather gloves, slipping them off one finger at a time and dropping them onto the carpeted floor.

"You didn't just interfere with port logistics, Robert," Gabriel said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent, terrified ballroom. "You killed my brother."
