Chapter 2 - The Gold Coast Sanctuary

The armored Mercedes sedan slipped silently through the gates of the Gold Coast penthouse garage just before dawn. The storm had passed, leaving the Chicago streets slick and gleaming under amber streetlights, but the tension inside the vehicle could have cut glass.

Gabriel sat in the back seat with Mia resting against his shoulder. When she had finally woken up in the safe-room an hour earlier, the shock and adrenaline crash had hit her all at once. Her knees had buckled, and she would have hit the marble floor if Gabriel hadn't caught her. Without a word, he had lifted her into his arms, carrying her out to the private elevator while she stared up at him in a daze of disbelief and exhaustion.

Now, in the private medical wing of the penthouse, Dr. Howard—a trusted family physician who had patched up Romano men for three decades—gently cleaned the scraped knuckles on Mia’s right hand while applying antiseptic to the purple bruise blooming across her shoulder.

"Nothing's broken," Dr. Howard murmured, packing away his instruments into a leather kit. "Severe exhaustion, mild dehydration, and soft tissue trauma from the zip-ties. She needs twelve hours of uninterrupted sleep and an IV saline drip, which I’ve already set up."

"Thank you, Doctor," Gabriel said from the doorway, his arms crossed over his chest.

Dr. Howard nodded, grabbed his bag, and slipped out of the room, leaving the door cracked open.

Mia lay propped up against crisp white linen sheets, an IV line taped securely to the back of her left hand. Her hair had been washed and brushed out, falling in soft waves around her shoulders, and she was wearing a clean, oversized cotton sleepshirt one of the housekeepers had provided. Despite the medical attention, her green eyes were wide, fixed nervously on Gabriel as he stepped fully into the room and closed the door behind him.

"You're safe here, Mia," Gabriel said, his voice softer than the hard edge he usually reserved for boardrooms and syndicate enforcers. "No one is getting past the security perimeter."

Mia swallowed hard, her fingers nervously pleating the edge of the white duvet. "Mr. Romano... I didn't mean to—I didn't know the motorcade was going to be hit. I just got reassigned to the downtown audit team yesterday morning because Miller said the quarterly numbers didn't match the port authority filings."

"Miller was doing his job," Gabriel replied, walking over to the side of the bed and pulling up a leather chair. He sat down, resting his elbows on his knees. "And you did yours. And then some."

Mia looked down at her bandaged hand, a faint flush of color rising in her pale cheeks. "I was terrified. When they threw us in that van... when the man grabbed Leo... I thought about my little sister back in Madison. I thought about what would happen if someone took her." She looked up, her green eyes locking onto his dark ones with surprising intensity. "I couldn't let them take your nephew, Mr. Romano. Daniel... everyone in the office still talks about how much he loved that little boy before he passed. I couldn't let his son be taken."

Hearing his dead brother's name spoken with such genuine reverence struck Gabriel like a physical blow. For eighteen months, Daniel’s name had been a jagged glass shard in the back of his throat—something family members whispered around holidays, a tragedy wrapped in silence and guilt. Hearing it from a quiet accountant who had never even met his brother made the pain fresh, but also strangely human.

"Call me Gabriel," he said quietly.

Mia blinked, surprised. "Mr.—Gabriel. What happens now? Sterling's men... they saw my face. They know I got away with the box truck."

"Sterling’s men won't be bothering anyone much longer," Gabriel said, and the absolute flatness of his tone carried a terrifying promise.

Before Mia could ask what he meant, a sharp knock sounded at the door, and Marco pushed it open, holding a secure laptop.

"Boss," Marco said, his eyes darting to Mia before looking back at Gabriel. "We decrypted the drive she brought out in her boot. You need to see this right now."

May you like

Gabriel stood up, giving Mia’s shoulder a reassuring squeeze before following Marco out into the private hallway. The door clicked shut behind them, sealing off the room, but the look on Marco's face told Gabriel that the war had just escalated to a level neither of them had anticipated.
