Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

A murmur of shock and outrage rippled through the crowd of dignitaries and judges. Several prominent attorneys stood up from their tables, sputtering in protest.

"This is an outrage!" a federal judge near the front row shouted, standing up and pointing a trembling finger at Gabriel. "Guards! Remove this man immediately! Senator Vance is a pillar of this community—"

"Shut your mouth, Judge," Gabriel said without breaking eye contact with his uncle, and the sheer, chilling authority in his tone caused the judge to sit back down in stunned silence.

Senator Vance swallowed hard, his hands gripping the mahogany podium so tightly his knuckles turned paper-white. But the politician's veneer of charm hadn't entirely vanished; he forced a thin, desperate sneer across his lips.

"You're out of your mind, Gabriel," Robert said, his voice echoing through the microphone. "Daniel’s death was a tragic traffic accident on a wet road. The state police investigated it. The coroner signed off on it. You're grieving, and you're lashing out because you can't accept that sometimes bad things just happen."

"It wasn't an accident," Gabriel said quietly, taking a slow step toward the stage stairs. "Because eighteen months ago, Daniel didn't just audit the port records. He found your signature on the wire transfers funding Damian Sterling's offshore accounts."

Robert’s eyes flickered with a sudden, microscopic panic—a micro-expression that didn't go unnoticed by the federal marshals who had just silently pushed their way through the shattered back doors behind Gabriel’s men.

"You have no proof," Robert snapped, his voice rising in defensive anger. "Everything you're saying is the paranoid delusion of a criminal syndicate boss trying to smear a public official!"

"He doesn't need proof, Senator," a sharp, clear voice echoed from the back of the ballroom.

The crowd parted as Marco walked down the center aisle, flanked by two federal agents in dark suits holding a thick encrypted data drive. Behind them walked Mia Carver, her hair slightly ruffled, her eyes sharp and completely unafraid as she looked up at the man who had ordered the hit on her motorcade.

"Because the federal anti-corruption strike force received the complete master ledger and wire transfer records thirty minutes ago," Mia said loudly, stepping up beside Gabriel. "Signed by your own hand, Senator Vance. Including the authorization to tamper with the brake lines on Daniel Romano’s vehicle."

The ballroom erupted into complete chaos. Flashbulbs from hidden reporters' cameras flared in the darkness, shouts of outrage echoed off the crystal chandeliers, and three federal marshals drew their sidearms, marching straight up the steps of the stage to slap steel handcuffs onto Robert Vance’s wrists.

As the senator was dragged away screaming about political conspiracies, the heavy silence of the grand room settled back over the crowd.

Gabriel turned his head, looking down at the quiet, extraordinary accountant standing beside him. The war was over. The ledgers were clean. And for the first time in eighteen months, the ghost of Daniel Romano could finally rest in peace.

Gabriel reached out, gently taking Mia’s bruised hand in his own.

"Come on, Mia," he whispered, a faint, genuine smile finally breaking across his face. "Let's go home and see Leo."
