Chapter 5 - The Digital Phantom

The subterranean server room beneath the Moretti estate was bathed in a harsh, pulsating amber light. Automated emergency klaxons flashed silently along the reinforced concrete walls as the master mainframe cycled through crisis protocols.
Daniel strode into the vault with long, furious strides, his heavy boots echoing off the concrete floor. Right behind him came Emily, her fingers already flying across her portable tablet as she tried to establish a reverse trace on the intrusion. Walter trailed closely behind, guarding the iron doorway with his hand resting on his service weapon.
“They didn't just breach the firewall,” Emily said, her voice tight with intense concentration as lines of encrypted code cascaded down her screen at blinding speed. “They used our own biometric handshake from yesterday’s Zurich asset transfer to spoof the master administrator rights.”
Daniel stood beside her, watching the cascading data blocks with cold, calculated fury. “Can you isolate the proxy server?”
“I’m trying,” Emily muttered, her eyes darting across the text. “They’re bouncing the signal through seven different satellite relays—Zurich, the Cayman Islands, Singapore, and back to a local IP address right here in Chicago.”
Daniel turned sharply to Walter. “Did our perimeter sensors pick up any physical movement near the fiber-optic trunk lines outside?”
“Nothing, boss,” Walter shook his head, wiping sweat from his forehead. “The main trunk lines are buried six feet underground inside reinforced concrete conduits. Unless they physically tapped into the junction box on 5th Street, they couldn't have accessed the hardwire.”
“Then they didn't need to tap the trunk,” a calm, icy voice echoed from the iron doorway.
They all turned.
Evelyn Moretti walked slowly into the server room, leaning on her silver-tipped cane. Despite her seventy-two years, her eyes were razor-sharp, carrying the terrifying clarity of a general who had survived half a century of corporate and underworld warfare.
“Mother,” Daniel said, stepping toward her. “This area isn't secure. You should be in your quarters.”
“Nonsense, Daniel,” Evelyn replied smoothly, stopping beside the master console. She looked down at Emily’s screen, her expression darkening into a grim, knowing scowl. “You can’t lock out a ghost when you left the back door wide open.”
Emily looked up, confused and breathless. “What do you mean, Grandmother?”
Evelyn reached out with her free hand, tapping the glass screen of the console. “Twelve years ago, when Arthur Sterling supposedly died in that clinic fire, the police recovered his charred laptop. They thought the data was destroyed. But Arthur wasn't just a medical researcher; he was a pioneer in decentralized quantum ledger systems. He didn't store his patents on a server—he stored them in a living, breathing network.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened. “A human proxy.”
“Precisely,” Evelyn nodded grimly. “Arthur didn't trust machines. He embedded the master decryption keys inside the biometric firmware of the original Solmere medical implants—implants that were given to his closest associates... and his financial backers.”
Emily’s blood ran cold as the horrifying realization hit her. “Marcus... Marcus didn't just want me for my family name. He needed me because my father’s medical trials... because I carry the biometric signature in my system from the experimental treatments I received after the fire.”
Before anyone could answer, the master console beeped once.
The amber warning lights suddenly turned a brilliant, blood-red.
A single unencrypted video file popped up on the primary monitor, accompanied by an automated audio playback.
Daniel slammed his hand onto the desk, hitting play.
The screen flickered, revealing the face of a man sitting in a dimly lit, high-rise office overlooking the Chicago skyline. He wasn't wearing a mask. He wasn't hiding in the shadows. He looked directly into the camera with a calm, chillingly polite smile.
"Mr. Moretti. Miss Vale," Viktor Vance’s smooth, cultured voice echoed through the subterranean vault. "I want to thank you for bringing the girl back into the fold so securely. It saved my team the trouble of tracking her down across three states."
Viktor leaned forward, resting his elbows on his mahogany desk.
"The Solmere patents belong to Vanguard Holdings now. And by sunrise tomorrow, the federal government will receive an anonymous dossier proving that the entire Moretti fortune was built on illegal corporate acquisition, medical fraud, and money laundering."
Viktor’s smile widened into something truly predatory.
"Enjoy your estate while you can, Mr. Moretti. Because the war you thought you won last night... was only the opening skirmish."

The video file instantly deleted itself, leaving behind a blank, flashing screen as the server mainframe powered down with a heavy, final click.
