Chapter 8 - Descent into Sector 4

The iron grate of the abandoned municipal drainage shaft was cold, rusted, and covered in a thick layer of grimy winter slush.
Crouched in the freezing shadows of the industrial docklands, Walter used a silent hydraulic cutter to shear through the heavy security bolts holding the grate in place. The metal gave way with barely a whisper, dropping silently into the dark, echoing concrete tunnel below.
"We’re inside," Walter whispered into his comm-link, keeping his weapon drawn and scanning the dripping, fog-filled corridor.
From forty yards away, hidden in the pitch-black utility crawlspace above the drainage pipe, Daniel’s voice came back clear and steady over the earpiece. "Moving to the upper catwalk. Emily, stay close to Walter. If anything moves, do not hesitate."
"I have my own sidearm, Dad," Emily whispered back, her fingers tightening around the grip of the compact Glock Walter had handed her before they left the estate. Beneath her heavy tactical jacket, her tablet was linked directly to the master override cable.
They slipped into the subterranean labyrinth like ghosts.
Sector 4 was a relic of a bygone industrial era—a sprawling underground complex of rusted water pumps, towering concrete pylons, and damp, cavernous corridors where the only sound was the steady, rhythmic drip-drip-drip of freezing water hitting the floor.
As they rounded a corner near the central pumping station, a faint, amber glow spilled out from a heavy steel fire door ahead. Soft electronic hums echoed down the corridor, mingling with the low murmur of voices.
Emily motioned for Walter to halt. She crouched behind a rusted concrete pillar, pulling out her tablet to check the localized network map.
"We’re fifty feet away from the primary server room," Emily whispered, her breath pluming in the freezing air. "Viktor’s main relay is wired directly into the municipal fiber trunk right behind that door."
"Hold position," Daniel’s voice crackled softly through the comms. "I’m directly above their command post on the upper service gantry. I have a clear view of three armed guards near the server racks... and Viktor Vance is sitting at the primary terminal."
Emily peered around the edge of the concrete pillar. Through a small, reinforced wire-glass window in the heavy steel door, she could see him.
Viktor Vance sat in a plush leather office chair that looked absurdly out of place amid the industrial concrete and exposed copper wiring. He wore his immaculate wool vest, sipping coffee from a porcelain cup as he watched lines of cascading data scroll across three massive curved monitors.
"He thinks he’s already won," Emily murmured, a cold anger flaring in her chest.
"He’s about to get a very rude awakening," Walter muttered, checking his shotgun chamber.
Suddenly, Viktor’s voice rang out clearly through the thin metal of the door, speaking to someone off-camera.
"Check the perimeter sensors again, Julian. The Moretti security team is entirely too quiet. People like Daniel don't sit back and wait to be executed—they strike."
From the shadows near the back of the room, a second figure stepped into view. Julian, his arms crossed, sneered. "They can't strike what they can't find, Viktor. By morning, the federal injunction will seize the estate, and the entire Moretti fortune will be liquidated under our corporate umbrella."
Inside the hallway, Emily exchanged a swift, knowing glance with Walter.
She didn't wait for permission. She tapped her earpiece.

"Dad," Emily whispered firmly. "Now."
