Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Sub-Basement

The sudden darkness in the subterranean server room felt heavy, almost physical, as the primary mainframe cut its power reserves and switched to silent emergency battery mode. Only the dim, pulsing red glow of the backup status lights illuminated the tense, motionless figures of Daniel, Emily, and Evelyn.
"He knew," Emily whispered, her fingers hovering motionless over her tablet. Her voice was barely a breath against the cold stone walls. "Viktor Vance didn't just hack our firewall. He anticipated every single move we made from the moment Marcus showed up at the gate."
Daniel didn't answer immediately. He stood rigid beside the dead console, his knuckles white as he gripped the edge of the metal desk. His dark eyes were fixed on the black screen where Viktor’s face had just vanished. The quiet, calculating fury radiating from him was palpable enough to make Walter instinctively step back toward the exit.
"Walter," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a dangerously calm register. "Trace that local IP address. I want a physical team at that relay station within ten minutes."
"I already ran a parallel trace while the video was playing, boss," Walter replied, his brow furrowed as he stared down at his own ruggedized handheld unit. "The signal didn't originate from a standard server farm or an office building. The metadata points straight to the abandoned municipal waterworks on the industrial docklands. Sector 4."
Evelyn leaned heavily on her silver-tipped cane, her sharp gaze scanning the dark corners of the vault. "Sector 4 was decommissioned by the city council fifteen years ago," she noted, her voice steady despite her age. "A massive underground labyrinth of concrete drainage tunnels and old pumping stations. It’s the kind of place where a man can run an entire server array without ever drawing a single watt of public power."
Emily looked up from her screen, the realization dawning on her with terrifying clarity. "That’s why the firewall bypass was so clean. He didn't hack our system from the outside—he had a localized transmitter close enough to piggyback directly onto our underground fiber cables."
"Then we go down there and tear his operation apart," Daniel said, turning sharply toward the doorway. He reached inside his coat, checking the magazine of his Sig Sauer with a sharp, metallic click.
"No, Daniel," Evelyn commanded, raising her cane and striking the concrete floor with a crisp, authoritative sound. She stepped between her son and the exit. "If Viktor wanted a straightforward shootout, he wouldn't have spent twelve years hiding behind shell companies and corporate proxies. He wants you to charge into Sector 4 blind. He wants you trapped in those tunnels where his security teams hold every tactical advantage."
Emily’s mind raced, connecting the fragmented pieces of the puzzle that had haunted her for over a decade. "Grandmother is right. Viktor isn't just trying to steal our assets; he’s trying to provoke a violent federal response so he can play the victim in the media. If we attack him on his own turf without a legal paper trail, the Department of Justice will turn their crosshairs from Vanguard Holdings straight onto us."
Walter nodded slowly in agreement. "She’s right, boss. My contacts inside the federal field office told me this morning that anonymous financial tips have already started trickling into the SEC regarding Moretti logistics accounts. Someone is setting the board for a multi-front legal annihilation."
Daniel stopped. He looked from his mother to Emily, the raw, protective instinct of a father warring with the calculated discipline of a syndicate leader. Slowly, the rigid tension in his shoulders relaxed just a fraction. He holstered his weapon.
"If we can't storm the waterworks, and we can't let him wipe our accounts... what do we do?" Daniel asked, his voice low and intense.
Emily took a deep breath, her eyes locking onto her father with a sudden, fierce determination that mirrored his own. She tapped the screen of her tablet, bringing up a complex, multi-layered schematic of the city’s underground infrastructure.

"We don't attack his servers," Emily said softly, a faint, confident smile touching her lips. "We cut off his oxygen."
