Chapter 9 - The Overload Protocol

The overhead service gantry exploded into sudden, violent motion.

With a deafening crash, a heavy steel maintenance hatch blew off its hinges. Before the guards inside the server room could even lift their weapons, Daniel Moretti dropped down from the ceiling like an apex predator, landing squarely on top of the lead mercenary and driving him hard into the concrete floor with bone-crushing force.

"Contact!" someone shouted inside the room.

The remaining two guards spun around, raising their submachine guns, but Walter burst through the steel doorway with his shotgun leveled, firing two rapid non-lethal suppression rounds that instantly dropped both men to the ground with breathless, agonizing groans.

Viktor Vance didn't flinch.

He didn't scream, and he didn't run. He slowly set his porcelain coffee cup down on the desk, stood up from his leather chair, and turned around to face the doorway as Emily stepped calmly into the room, her tablet held firmly in her hand.

"Well, well," Viktor said, a slow, condescending smile spreading across his thin lips. "The prodigal daughter returns. I must admit, Emily, I expected you to hide behind your father's fortress walls a little longer."

Daniel stepped over the unconscious guard on the floor, his Sig Sauer pointed straight at Viktor’s chest, his eyes burning with cold, lethal intent. One word from Daniel, and Viktor’s story would end right there in the damp concrete drainage tunnels.

"Don't move," Daniel warned, his voice dangerously low.

Viktor raised his hands slightly, his smile never wavering. "You can shoot me, Daniel. You can put a bullet through my heart right now. But it won't stop the automated transfer protocol. The moment my heartbeat stops, a smart-contract script executes, sending the final batch of federal indictments straight to the Department of Justice."

Emily walked past her father, stopping just six feet away from the desk. She looked at Viktor not with fear, but with absolute, clinical pity.

"You really didn't check the encryption architecture of the files you stole, did you, Viktor?" Emily asked, her voice calm and steady.

Viktor’s confident smile faltered for a fraction of a second. "What are you talking about?"

Emily lifted her tablet and plugged a fiber-optic data cable directly into Viktor’s master terminal.

"My father’s medical patents aren't just corporate assets," Emily said, her fingers dancing across her screen as she executed a master command line. "They’re bound to a living biometric key. The moment your proxy server tried to download the encrypted master ledger from our vault..."

The three massive curved monitors behind Viktor suddenly flashed from brilliant blue to a harsh, warning red.

ERROR: BIOMETRIC MISMATCH. SYSTEM LOCKDOWN INITIATED.

Viktor’s eyes widened in sudden, stark horror. He lunged toward the keyboard, but it was already locked.

"You didn't steal the patents, Viktor," Emily whispered, leaning slightly over the desk until she was staring directly into his pale eyes. "You downloaded a logic bomb. Every single offshore account, shell company, and hidden subsidiary belonging to Vanguard Holdings is currently being unmasked and reported directly to the international banking commission."

Julian, who had been pinned against the server racks by Walter’s shotgun barrel, let out a strangled cry as his own personal backup terminal sparked and died in a shower of tiny electrical arcs.

"No," Viktor breathed, his voice cracking as he watched endless lines of red text cascade down his screens, exposing every illegal transaction he had made over the last decade. "That’s impossible... I wrote those algorithms myself!"

"You wrote them for my father twelve years ago," Emily replied coldly, pulling the data cable out of the terminal. "And you forgot the one rule my grandmother taught me: never underestimate a Carter when they’re backing you into a corner."

Before Viktor could lunge for the console again, heavy tactical boots echoed down the concrete drainage tunnel behind them.

A dozen federal agents, led by Agent Sarah Vance, poured through the steel doorway, their federal badges held high and heavy zip-ties ready.

"Viktor Vance," Agent Vance announced, stepping forward with an arrest warrant in hand. "You are under arrest for international corporate espionage, financial fraud, and conspiracy against federal entities. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As federal officers swarmed the room, pinning Viktor and Julian to the floor, Daniel walked over to Emily. He looked down at her, the hard lines of a syndicate boss melting away, leaving only a proud, loving father.

"Are you alright?" Daniel asked softly.

Emily smiled, sliding her tablet into her coat pocket and resting her hand against her father’s arm.

May you like

"Never better, Dad," she whispered. "Let’s go home."
