Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Damned

The audio filled the sleek conference room with crystal-clear precision. Gavin’s arrogant voice booming about how I clung to him because I had nothing of my own; the sharp, sickening sound of leather striking flesh; Charlotte’s snide laughter over my wine; and finally, the damning, incriminating confession from Mason, SwiftFreight’s chief financial officer, bragging about moving assets, hiding money through shell companies, and tying forty million dollars in fraudulent loans to marital assets without my consent.

When the recording finally clicked off, silence settled over the room like a physical weight.

Sarah Jenkins, Crestview’s lead corporate litigation partner, adjusted her glasses, her expression looking like a cat that had just cornered a cage full of helpless mice.

“Well,” Sarah said softly, shuffling a stack of preliminary legal briefs. “That recording alone constitutes felony domestic abuse, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit corporate embezzlement, and fraudulent conveyance of marital property under Minnesota law. But Mason’s confession about manipulating the financial statements submitted to our due-diligence team? That crosses the line into federal securities fraud.”

“They thought they were bulletproof because they assumed I was a penniless nobody who would sign away her rights out of fear,” I said, taking a seat at the obsidian table and accepting a cup of black coffee from Arthur. “Gavin told me yesterday that in three days, he’s closing the biggest deal of his life. The press conference is scheduled for Thursday morning at the Minneapolis Convention Center. Every major financial outlet will be there.”

“And the 3.2 billion dollars from Crestview is the anchor investment that validates SwiftFreight’s inflated nine-billion-dollar valuation,” my father added, walking back to his seat and interlocking his fingers. “Without our capital, the entire house of cards collapses instantly. The institutional lenders will call their loans by Friday afternoon, and SwiftFreight will enter Chapter 7 bankruptcy before the weekend.”

“I don’t just want them to go bankrupt, Dad,” I said, leaning forward, the coffee cup warming my hands. “I want Gavin to stand on that stage, in front of the cameras, the board members, and Charlotte. I want him to announce the partnership. And then, right at the climax of his triumph, I want us to pull the rug out from under him in the most public, humiliating way imaginable.”

Sarah nodded approvingly. “We can orchestrate a delayed enforcement action. We let them proceed all the way to the final signing ceremony on Thursday morning. Our legal team has already been reviewing their due-diligence disclosures. Mason and Gavin certified those financial statements under penalty of federal perjury. If we drop the forensic audit report and the audio evidence directly to the U.S. Attorney’s office and the SEC while they are sitting on that stage, federal marshals will walk out and arrest them live on Bloomberg TV.”

“What about the forty million in fraudulent loans Mason tied to my name?” I asked, narrowing my eyes.

“Nullified immediately under the doctrine of duress and fraud, backed by your father’s emergency judicial injunctions,” Sarah replied smoothly. “Furthermore, because you signed the divorce agreement under physical duress—proven by the medical examination we are going to document right now—the settlement is legally voidable. You walk away clean, and Gavin is left holding a multi-billion-dollar liability bag.”

My father reached across the table and placed his warm, heavy hand over mine. “You endured six years of his abuse while hiding your identity, Sabrina. You played the dutiful, silent wife. Now, it’s time to show them what happens when you wake a sleeping giant.”

“Let’s begin,” I said, standing up and buttoning my blazer. “I need a forensic team to lock down every shell company Mason mentioned in that recording before they have time to wipe the servers.”
